Scotland is experiencing a very rare heat wave and on the day that we were on this tour the temperature reached the mid 90's. Saturday, June 19, 1999. Wedding at Hitcham, Runneymeade and Poulton Park. The reason for our visit here was that Jenny had informed me that I needed a hat! All Saint's Church, Hitcham. There were inscriptions and memorials all along the walls of the church but one in particular caught our eye. Apparently in years past, if you were prominent enough you got to be buried inside the church instead of out in the churchyard with everyone else. The inscription reads:. Saturday, November 3, 2001. Cheddar Gorge - Atumn 2001. That "fellow" single handedly yanked Britain out of the dark ages, defeated the Danes against all odds and by doing so created a national identity that survived in spite of the best efforts of William in 1066, and all he is remembered for is burning some stupid cake. That's sad. But my appreciation of the gorge was greatly enhanced by using my imagination to picture him and his band of Thanes riding through the area. Thursday, November 1, 2001.
