Confessions of an old nerd

Confessions of an old nerd. General thoughts about technology. Focus on OO technology, Java, software processes, and generally anything that comes to mind. Thursday, June 14, 2007. I've been thinking about standards for service-oriented architecture after a discussion with architects in our CTO team and our IITS division (IITS was formerly known as IDX). If you're working on service-oriented architecture, the sheer number of standards you have to be aware of is astounding. Links to this post. But develop...

Confessions of an old nerd. General thoughts about technology. Focus on OO technology, Java, software processes, and generally anything that comes to mind. Sunday, August 27, 2006. Let's see where this goes. Anyway, I discovered Kim's blogs last week, and realized that I've become pretty complacent. I spend my days at work, and haven't been keeping up with being on the bleeding edge. So I guess I'd have to say the Kim has goaded me.no, inspired me to start blogging. Links to this post. Confessions of an old nerd. General thoughts about technology. Focus on OO technology, Java, software processes, and generally anything that comes to mind. Sunday, October 22, 2006. And a month later. Overall, scrum works. The daily scrums are great at communicating progress. Every day, each team member communicates the tasks he or she is working on, the tasks planned for the next day, and obstacles that are preventing progress. That works great! But we have encountered a few big challenges. First, w...

Confessions of an old nerd. General thoughts about technology. Focus on OO technology, Java, software processes, and generally anything that comes to mind. Thursday, September 14, 2006. So our first daily Scrum started on Monday and it went pretty well. In meeting with the developers, they confirmed what I originally suspected. Our throughput is low, not because the problems we have to solve are too complex, but because the developers are constantly interrupted to handle the next. Links to this post.

The New Mackay House: Mar 25, 2009

http://mackayhouse.blogspot.com/2009_03_25_archive.html

The New Mackay House. A day-by-day story of an owner-built house in the village of Hartland, Wisconsin. Wednesday, March 25, 2009. The cabinetmaker, Brian Runde of BR Custom Woodcraft in Wales, delivered our cabinets today- one day ahead of schedule. He brought his dad along to help unload the cabinets from the truck. We stuffed them in the garage:. They pretty well filled the garage. And we're really happy with how they turned out. Most of the cabinets are maple:. I'll post some more pictures of the cab...

The New Mackay House. A day-by-day story of an owner-built house in the village of Hartland, Wisconsin. Wednesday, January 7, 2009. Workshop and Garage Doors. The workshop is starting to look like a workshop. And the garage is starting to look like a garage- doors and all. Here's some proof: . My brother-in-law Bill installed the garage doors earlier this week:. As I promised in the last post, here's one of Danny running wires:. The inspector did mention that he didn't want insulation to start until the ...

The New Mackay House. A day-by-day story of an owner-built house in the village of Hartland, Wisconsin. Friday, March 27, 2009. Now we have a kitchen. A lot of progress in the last couple of days. Brian is quickly getting cabinets installed. First the kitchen:. The picture turned out a bit too dark, I'll upload another after the counters go in. Here's one more view of the kitchen:. The New Mackay House. A day-by-day story of an owner-built house in the village of Hartland, Wisconsin. Monday, September 28, 2009. It's been more than three months since the last blog, but it's not just because I was too lazy to write. We moved in at the end of June, almost 9 months to the day after we started the project. But we still had a bunch of work to do before we could finish off the loan, and stick a fork in the house. First, we have some furniture in the family room now:. Toys in the loft:.

The New Mackay House. A day-by-day story of an owner-built house in the village of Hartland, Wisconsin. Tuesday, January 20, 2009. Insulation and siding have started. Finally some more visible progress! The insulators started yesterday, and the framers started siding today. First the siding:. The Hardiplank siding looks good too, especially against the trim. Plenty of contrast. Here are the framers installing the siding on the south side of the house: . And one of the siding up close:. Links to this post.

The New Mackay House. A day-by-day story of an owner-built house in the village of Hartland, Wisconsin. Sunday, February 15, 2009. The siding and other exterior work was done last week. Here's a picture of the back of the house:. I'll post some interior pictures when we get a bit further along. The progress, and the blog posts, will slow down now- I'm spending more time doing what seems to be real work, so I'm too lazy to blog very frequently. Links to this post. The New Mackay House. A day-by-day story of an owner-built house in the village of Hartland, Wisconsin. Sunday, January 25, 2009. The framers made good progress on the siding last week. They're a bit over half way done: . They finished the south and east sides of the house. They still have the north and west sides, and the gables to do,  and they still have to  finish up the porch trim. They should get everything done by the end of the  week (weather permitting). The New Mackay House. A day-by-day story of an owner-built house in the village of Hartland, Wisconsin. Thursday, April 16, 2009. The interior work is progressing, but pretty slowly. The details take a lot more time than other tasks. Scott is just about done with the stairs, and I think they look fantastic:. The loft is a bit safer with the guard rail up now:. Countertops and appliances are in now. Here's the kitchen:. I'll post more pictures of the trim after I finish some more (some day real soon now).

The New Mackay House. A day-by-day story of an owner-built house in the village of Hartland, Wisconsin. Tuesday, February 3, 2009. The exterior is almost done. Just the shakes in the gable ends and finish work on the front porch, and it will be all done. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and let us get it done this week.  We've had quite a bit of cold, windy weather in the last few weeks that has slowed things down quite a bit. .
