To the end of the Earth and back… | MacKenzie's Musings

What I know…. New Year’s Resolutions →. To the end of the Earth and back…. December 6, 2013. The Things They Carried. Every word in that box is a memory. Some pleasant, some not so much. But isn’t that why we keep things? To help us remember? To be reminded of the things that have slipped away? What is something you will move to the ends of the Earth if necessary to keep close at hand? 3 thoughts on “ To the end of the Earth and back…. December 6, 2013 at 10:39 pm. Newer posts →. Breathing Fountains and Stupid Human Tricks. October 7, 2013. Here’s what NOT to do if the drinking fountain in your classroom that is sealed in plastic suddenly begins to breathe:. 1) Stop mid lecture and approach it like a wounded animal. (All attention is now on the fountain and not on the Haikus you were discussing.). If your fountain begins breathing rest assured that your lesson will be shot for the rest of the class, that silliness will ensue continuously, and that very little haiku...

Why we should read Beowulf or at least why I read it with my students…. The Trifecta of Chaos Plus One. April 14, 2014. Some days things are destine to go wrong Forgot your umbrella? A torrential down pour moments before you leave. Running late? Grid lock. Waited to the last minute to print that important document? Tuesday was one of those days. With exactly four perfectly timed events even the best-laid plans are turned upside down. Here, in order is what ensued. 2) Amidst the chaos and chatter of the b...

What can I say I really like pizza and cake. I am still alive and healthy so I guess that one gets a check. Do I exercise more? It comes in waves. Can I touch my toes? Most days. The Trifecta of Chaos Plus One. April 14, 2014. Some days things are destine to go wrong Forgot your umbrella? A torrential down pour moments before you leave. Running late? Grid lock. Waited to the last minute to print that important document? Printer doesn’t work. It is a commonly accepted fact that things will almost always go spectacularly wrong at the least convenient time. At least that is my experience; you may be one of those rare luck people untouched by chaos. Tuesday was one of those days.

Karen's Cracked Cup. The Road You Want to Take. The last time I was completely happy behind the wheel? It would have to have been when I was about four years old and the wheel was attached to a Dukes of Hazzard dashboard. My summer as a seventeen-year-old-driver-in-training was the worst of my life. Again, not an exaggeration. Was not enough to distract me from my driver’s training depression. My driving instructor, Mr. Southwell, thought I would be a good student. He explained that kids who don&...Even ...

Karen's Cracked Cup. Something to Tell You. On Audrey’s first day of Kindergarten, I took the photo below. On Audrey’s first day of first grade, I took the photo below. And the night before Audrey’s first day of second grade, realizing we hadn’t made a cutesy poster, I shot up in bed with an, “Oh, crap! The year that Audrey turned 6, Jack turned 4, and Andrew turned 2, I wrote each one of them a special birthday poem. I love that you ask questions like this: “Which do you like better? Karen's Cracked Cup. If you need to know how to reconcile your checkbook, I’m your gal. If you’re looking for examples of famous reconciliations, I can name a few. (Well, as long as I can draw from soap operas and. If you want me to facilitate a reconciliation between you and one of your brothers, I will do my best. As in the Sacrament of Confession? Not really in my wheelhouse. So, over the past few months, as you prepared for your First Reconciliation, I wasn’t sure how or where I fit in. Coming up wit...

Karen's Cracked Cup. When I learned about the dark sky park, I became uncharacteristically assertive. I want to go there. I want to go there. This. Summer. We pretended we didn’t hear Jack’s pleas to go home. The dark walk through the woods to the lake shore. A little unnerving, but turning around 5 minutes in wasn’t something the rest of us were willing to consider, so we pressed on, thankful Sean had remembered flashlights. We sat down in a tight formation. We had come almost 300 miles for this. Remark...

Karen's Cracked Cup. The night my father shot himself, my sister and I were whisked off to my best friend Becky’s house. I don’t remember the drive. There’s a lot that’s fuzzy about that night. But I distinctly remember being in Ed and Linda’s bed, tucked in beside my sister. We watched. We did not speak the nightmarish things we were thinking. Somehow, morning came. Linda and Ed helped glue me back together. Then, it was the neighbors who collected $200. They were the glue, too. The super glue was my mo...

Karen's Cracked Cup. Around the time of your birthday, I opened an e-mail from BabyCenter. The subject header was innocuous enough, something along the lines of. But the very first line took the wind out of my sails. Your child is firmly in mid-childhood, fun years of remarkable capability and quick learning coupled with a pretty agreeable personality and growing self-sufficiency. It was the term. That got me. Karen's Cracked Cup. My [Conversion] Story, Part 2. 8220;You have God within you, so you do not have to look for God.” Thich Nhat Hanh. In high school and college, my approach to church-going was not dissimilar to my approach to dating. I wasn’t very discriminating. I went on a lot of first dates, and I went to church with anyone who asked, but I made no commitments. I would not settle. In love or religion. Then, about a year after college, I met a boy at a bar. During Communion, as I loitered at the bac...

Karen's Cracked Cup. Audrey is in bed with her nose in a Boxcar Mystery. I pass her door, pretending I don’t know how late it is. I stop in the boys’ room for one final check. Jack tries to tell me how much he loves me. I love you 100 times . . . 100 times . . . like, um . . . you know . . . like 100 times . . . He stretches out his arms in case that will help. He stutters. He says. Eventually, I back out of the room, nodding in agreement. Comments : 1 Comment. From the mitten to the bay. A journey towar...

Jena Delk – Just another WordPress site
Just another WordPress site. Written Thursday, January 5, 2017, 8:37:28 AM. We are remodeling our little house here in Vegas. The drywaller and plumber were here this morning. Once they were finished, I went out to run overdue errands. I put in Hidden in My Heart which one of my favorite CD’s into the player. The gentle cadence of this music relaxes me and helps me focus on God. I sure needed it! Just look around for a few minutes until the pharmacy opens back up. Then onto the fun markdown section, I go...
