Everyone Has Reversals: Absolutely, For Sure
http://reversals.blogspot.com/2009/03/absolutely-for-sure.html
Story Lessons, Big and Small (Warning: Spoilers! March 02, 2009. Absolutely, For Sure. It's been months since I saw Definitely, Maybe. I knew I'd blog about it eventually, but it's taken me all this time to really articulate why I think it's a strong, fresh romantic comedy. I thought - is it because I like all 4 of the leads? Ryan Reynolds has grown on me a lot, but the real gems of the film are the women: Elizabeth Banks, Rachel Weisz, and Isla Fisher? But no. I've realized what it is. The fact is, this...

Everyone Has Reversals: February 2006
http://reversals.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_archive.html
Story Lessons, Big and Small (Warning: Spoilers! February 25, 2006. Heroes Need Saving, Too. One of the most poignant and satisfying moments in Batman Begins. Or something less nerdy. Point being, it's NICE when a hero is fallible. It reminds us of the strength of the enemy, and allows us to feel that slight bit of worry that the hero may not be able to save the day after all. Even if we know, deep down, that he will, we need to know how difficult it's going to be. Posted by Jennica at 1:21 PM. Contains ...

Story Lessons, Big and Small (Warning: Spoilers! May 31, 2006. Lessons from the Incredibly Obvious File, #2. Thanks for all your good wishes. The tour was wonderful. Books were sold. Even when people knew. There was poetry in them. And now, a post. This installment of "Lessons from the Incredibly Obvious File" might be subtitled "The P(l)ot-holed Premise". The premise of the comedy Last Holiday. Did you spot it, gentle reader? If you have the option to make the brain tumour inoperable. May 13, 2006.

Everyone Has Reversals: July 2006
http://reversals.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html
Story Lessons, Big and Small (Warning: Spoilers! July 30, 2006. House of Sand and Fog. Is a great illustration of the story-as-debate angle. Just as in a debate we might go back and forth on who we think will win, in stories we ping-pong back and forth between believing things are going to end well and believing things are going to end badly. When a story’s going to end happily, we need lots of moments when it seems like it could all go wrong. This is how the majority of conventional stories work. Milks ...

Everyone Has Reversals: March 2006

Story Lessons, Big and Small (Warning: Spoilers! March 31, 2006. That Extraordinary World Felt So. Ordinary. There are a few things worth praising in The Corpse Bride. Right down to the ghosty dog). But maybe my biggest complaint is that The Corpse Bride. S "extraordinary world" - the land of the dead, and the corpse bride's home- is so blah. It's a poorly defined "new world" in that we never understand how its rules work. How does the whole death thing work in this world? Are these people corporeal?

Everyone Has Reversals: September 2005
http://reversals.blogspot.com/2005_09_01_archive.html
Story Lessons, Big and Small (Warning: Spoilers! September 28, 2005. I know you've got lots going on in that purty little head of yours but will you please please please for the love of God shut your wordhole? For those (and I'm sometimes one of those. Who resist the blanket "don't use voice over" tenet, may I recommend the educational experience that is Little Black Book. Characters in rom-coms have done far, far worse, without apologizing. At least, not 'til the very end. Perhaps worst of all, the cons...

John Vigna: Booklist: "Impressive Debut Collection"
http://johnvignawriter.blogspot.com/2013/05/booklist-impressive-debut-collection.html
Thursday, May 16, 2013. Booklist: "Impressive Debut Collection". Recently, Booklist reviewed BULL HEAD and had some great things to say about it: "Muscular, lyrical prose . The characters, mostly men toughened byhardscrabble living, are drawn with understanding, insight, and brutal honesty. This impressive debut collection will appeal to readers of literary fiction like James Dickey's Deliverance. Larry Brown's Joe, and Annie Proulx's Wyoming stories.".
