The Cuckoo's Nest: Esperance in December
http://birdinginwesternaustralia.blogspot.com/2015/12/esperance-in-december.html
A blog about my birding adventures and observations in my home state of Western Australia. Saturday, 19 December 2015. On a recent trip to Esperance on Western Australia's south coast, I was able to spend a bit of time birding. We went via Kalgoorlie to break up the nine hour drive and stayed a night there. In the early hours of the morning I drove out of Kal to the Kurrawang Nature Reserve. This yielded very little - just a couple of White-fronted Honeyeaters. Cape Barren Goose, Esperance Golf Course.

A blog about my birding adventures and observations in my home state of Western Australia. Sunday, 8 February 2015. Hamilton Freeway Interchange Lakes 1 and 2. Just west of the Graham Farmer Freeway tunnel is a pair of lakes called Hamilton Freeway Interchange Lakes 1 and 2. I've driven past this place a hundred times and so have most Perthites but I had no idea what was there until this weekend. Dusky Moorhen with chick. Hardhead Ducks and an Australasian Grebe. The water quality in the lakes is improvi...

The Cuckoo's Nest: November 2014

A blog about my birding adventures and observations in my home state of Western Australia. Sunday, 30 November 2014. Sunday, 23 November 2014. In September this year, I drove up to Nalbarra Station which is about halfway between Payne's Find and Mount Magnet. Nalbarra is a working sheep station of around 370,000 acres. And there's plenty of birdlife if you don't mind the heat, the flies, the lack of phone reception and the bungarras. Pied Butcherbird and Yellow-throated Miners. Saturday, 22 November 2014.

A blog about my birding adventures and observations in my home state of Western Australia. Friday, 31 October 2014. Flying Over the Cuckoo's Nest. It's a life of disappointment. Bitter disappointment. Imagine driving 600 kilometres, sitting alone in the middle of a deserted national park, eating cereal out of a ziplock bag and whistling for hours on end in biting wind for a bird that never comes. At least, a bird that never comes for you. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Jennifer Spry's Birding Blog.

A blog about my birding adventures and observations in my home state of Western Australia. Thursday, 23 July 2015. Broome Birding in July. A recent week at the Broome Bird Observatory was an awesome way to escape the winter chill. The trip yielded about 50 lifers and made a sizeable contribution to my Casual Big Year goal of 200 WA birds. Different mangroves yielded different birds. The town mangroves in Broome are a great place to see the Red-headed Honyeater. The mangroves near the Observatory ...The B...

A blog about my birding adventures and observations in my home state of Western Australia. Monday, 1 December 2014. Bustards and Biliburning Rock. A couple of weeks back, I joined a group of intrepid birders from the WA Birds FaceBook group on a trip up to Biliburning Rock. Our mission was to find Bustards on a farm near the rock. Secret puddles, delicious deserts, plenty of flies, a cool night and great company all added to the excellent weekend of birding. Brown Falcon and pet spider. View my complete ...

The Cuckoo's Nest: January 2015
http://birdinginwesternaustralia.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
A blog about my birding adventures and observations in my home state of Western Australia. Sunday, 25 January 2015. Summer in Western Australia can present challenging conditions when birding, even around Perth. Morning easterlies with sea breezes in the afternoon, very hot, dry days, fewer birds and more snakes. Even so, an afternoon spent at Wungong Dam in the heat of summer still yielded some nice sightings. Or were they simply resting in the hot afternoon? New Holland Honeyeater searching for insects.
