Bankers, and in particular mortgage lenders, have made a confusing mess of the term interest. This happened because the interest rate used in the formulas for mortgage payments is not consistent with the yearly interest rate. They tried to clear this confusion up with the standard term APR, for annual percentage rate, but there is no agreement on just which costs get included in the APR!
