Chapter Four: Transplant

APRIL 4, 2000 - There is no way to fully prepare yourself for an operation like this. It's so much more complicated than a simple hospital stay. There are panic attacks and shaky nerves to steady. It's also easy to underestimate the psychological effects of a loved one giving you his or her organ so that you might live a longer, fuller life. On Tuesday, March 28, Amber and I packed up her car and headed out to Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Chapter 2: Donor?

John and his dad. Asking for a kidney is unlike anything else one could ask from another being. Thankfully, I never had to ask. The moment I told friends and family I might need a new kidney, without hesitation, they offered me theirs. Though minimal, the risks and consequences were never a consideration. I am extremely fortunate to have such support. Many people in need of a new kidney have no family or friends willing or able to donate.
Chapter 3: Dialysis

On that early fall day when I decided to pursue a transplant, a race of sorts began. I hoped to have the operation completed before I needed dialysis. For four months, I was winning. My creatinine was rising, but very slowly. When kidneys fail, they lose their ability to cleanse the blood. Inpurities and toxins begin to pile up, leaving the patient feeling ill. Dr Pruchno presented me the option of going on hemodialysis. "It's your choice, but I guarantee you'll feel better within a week," he said.

Since this project began, I have yearned to be more than just its subject. I wanted to be the one behind the camera - it is where I belong and where I feel most comfortable. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to photograph oneself. Especially when under anesthesia. These are simply pictures for the sake of pictures.

In the fall of 1998, these numbers were little more than a jumbled set of statistics for me. I knew early in life there was a chance my kidneys could fail, but I never gave it a second thought.
