ICJ Kenya: A Canadian in Nairobi. From Kenya, with International Justice, inter alia. Thursday, 23 August 2012. Week 2: IPSI Hague Symposium. Note: I'm now back in Nairobi trying to adjust to a more 'normal' routine. These next few posts are a week-by-week recap of the highlights of the Symposium. For other insight from some of the other participants, please check out the IPSI blog. And look at the pictures taken by Keith Lane. With the situation in South Africa. Outside of the symposium, week 2 was full...

ICJ Kenya: A Canadian in Nairobi. From Kenya, with International Justice, inter alia. Sunday, 23 September 2012. A Sober Comment: Youth and Violence. I am greatly disturbed and distressed by the outpourings of violence following the release of the anti-Islam video 'Innocence of Muslims'. I'm not putting up a link to that movie, because I'm not going to advertise it freely. I'm sure it is easy enough to find. Some on the basis of one incident that mutated into something larger ( the 2011 Tottenham Riots.

ICJ Kenya: A Canadian in Nairobi: Transitioning - Human Rights and Peacebuilding

ICJ Kenya: A Canadian in Nairobi. From Kenya, with International Justice, inter alia. Friday, 27 July 2012. Transitioning - Human Rights and Peacebuilding. The goal of the conference is to discuss, and hopefully create, workable solutions for ending conflict, establishing peace, and facilitating development. Lofty goals, but with a group of capable and motivated young intellectuals, it will be very interesting to see what turns out. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). ICJ Kenya: A Canadian in Nairobi: Complexicated: Lessons from Gulu

http://joshaticjkenya.blogspot.com/2012/09/complexicated-lessons-from-gulu.html

ICJ Kenya: A Canadian in Nairobi. From Kenya, with International Justice, inter alia. Wednesday, 5 September 2012. Complexicated: Lessons from Gulu. I had previously written about Invisible Children's KONY2012 movie. But interacting with the issues first-hand made my rebuttal of their work too simplistic. That movie, and the Stop Kony initiative, is so narrow and misses the major issue of the conflict in Northern Uganda. My question was "what happens after? But the real question is - "what now? But these...

On Thursday Cesar finally arrived from Canada. I am so excited he is here. He will be staying for a whole month, so we will be exploring the beauty of South Africa together. A young lawyer in South Africa...: October 2011

http://eleonorainsouthafrica.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

A young lawyer in South Africa. Monday, 31 October 2011. I have been trying to explore the local culture by learning about the two sports that are really popular here:. Last weekend we went to the semi-finals Natal Sharks game. This weekend we saw a one-day international test cricket match between. This is what I learned:. There is a lot of pushing and falling on the ground that results in players piling on top of each other. A lot of drinking helps more. People are quite wasted by the end. I have been in.

Dust and dirt and fumes. Dawn Four hours by the side of the road. How do you say ‘bathroom’ in Portuguese? The back of a truck. Crowds. Portuguese buns. Another few hours by the side of the road. https://viewfromdar.wordpress.com/2012/06/22/15-billion-dollars

My life in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. June 22, 2012. Today I sold my watch for 15 billion dollars. When the Zimbabwean economy collapsed in 2009, the highest note printed was for 1 trillion dollars. Shortly thereafter, the country switched to the American dollar. The trillion dollar notes are now sold to tourists for about $5 USD. The ten and five billion dollar notes go for a bit less. Dancing in the Zambezi rain | View From Dar

https://viewfromdar.wordpress.com/2012/07/26/dancing-in-the-zambezi-rain

My life in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. July 26, 2012. Dancing in the Zambezi rain. I took several precautions when I visited Victoria Falls last month. I armed myself with a big stick, I hired a security guard, and I rented a heavy-duty raincoat. Ensconced in thick plastic rain gear and armed with my stick and my guide, I set off to enjoy the natural wonder that is Victoria Falls. The falls were mesmerizing. I am not easily impressed by waterfalls. I am even more skeptical of waterfalls that are billed ...

http://eleonorainsouthafrica.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

A young lawyer in South Africa. Wednesday, 29 February 2012. I don't normally blog about work, because of the confidential nature of my consulation with individual clients. Yet an interesting thing happened yesterday that I just have to share with you. I previously wrote about the problem of access to the asylum process in South Africa. This problem is ongoing. As the day wore on we had some of the clients return to ensure that their names had in fact been placed on some sort of list. They also tried...

A young lawyer in South Africa...: September 2011

http://eleonorainsouthafrica.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

A young lawyer in South Africa. Tuesday, 27 September 2011. You Are Zulu Now. In South Africa September 24 marks Heritage Day (also known as Braai Day or King Shaka Day). On this day South Africans are encouraged to celebrate their culture, heritage and traditions. In Kwazulu-Natal (the province we are in) Heritage Day was previously known as King Shaka Day, celebrating the legendary Zulu king who united the Zulu clans into a nation. So we rented a car and were on our way. Our tour guide came about 15 mi...

Notes from a Charter Child. Notes from a Charter Child. Reflections on life, law and a journey to South Africa. The Child Journeys On. October 28, 2011. The child that died at Nyanga. The child is not dead. The child lifts his fist against his mother. Of freedom and the veld. In the shanty-towns for the cordoned heart. The child lifts his fist against his father. It’s up to you to look at your schedule and see what will work, but as you’re trying to fit some practice time into your busy day, the best thing to do might be to cut down on the days, increase the time, and actually improve. Practice Tip #2 – Have a Plan. On January 14, 2013. Next, you need to decide what you want to learn.
