Clara – Josh Sucher

http://joshsucher.com/clara

Clara is a brain-sensing, environment-augmenting, focus-enhancing lamp. It’s designed to help you optimize first for expansive creativity, and then for homing in on and concentrating on a singular idea. Clara uses an Arduino with Adafruit Neopixels and a Bluetooth-connected Neurosky MindWave Mobile EEG headset. To measure your attentiveness and respond accordingly. A technical writeup is available here. Clara was developed with Belen Tenorio. And Marcelo Mejía Cobo.

Stinkgo – Josh Sucher

http://joshsucher.com/stinkgo

Stinkgo is a wearable prototype that detects nearby ginkgo trees and activates an alert that vibrates with increasing intensity as a pedestrian approaches a tree. Why? Because the ginkgo is a lovely tree, but its fruit smells vile. I built Stinkgo using tree census data. Available via NYC’s Open Data API. It’s built on a Raspberry Pi (actually a wearable Pi clone called an ODROID W. Utilizing a Flora GPS. Unit from Adafruit. A complementary web simulator can be accessed at stinkgo.com.

Parkour – Josh Sucher

http://joshsucher.com/parkour

Parkour is a tool that visualizes alternate-side parking regulations in NYC. I built it in PHP. I utilized the PostGIS spatial plugin to build a database of streets and intersections using OpenStreetMap data, and cross-referenced against data I cleaned and organized after pulling it from the ancient DOT STATUS system. (NYC makes this info available via its Open Data. Parkour is set in Expressway, a TypeKit variant of the Highway Gothic. Typeface used by the US Federal Highway Administration.

November 19th, 2014 Comments Off on Stinkgo. So, in late August, my girlfriend and I moved into a lovely new apartment in the Slope, and everything was right with the world. 8230;until October. That’s when we were faced with our first true cohabitation challenge the ginkgo tree outside our front door. Let me get this out of the way first: the ginkgo is a wondrous species. The species is so hardy that it’s considered to be a living fossil. Several ginkgos even survived Hiroshima. Unit, a vibration motor.

December 20th, 2014 • permalink. I love my Yamaha A-760 Natural Sound Stereo Amplifier (circa 1981). I came across it on craigslist six years ago, and I knew that it was the one when I discovered this restoration project. Online. One doesn’t typically put that much effort into something without a good reason. It only confirmed my excitement when I learned that I was buying it from its original owner, who still had the owner’s manual. Who had tackled a similar project. 8230;and then, this project sat on t...

Smart & Dumber. January 16th, 2014 Comments Off on Smart & Dumber. I needed some peaceful, distraction-free time this month. To that end, I edited my hosts file. It still wasn’t enough, so I decided to. Upgrade to a lovely flip phone. Amusingly, it’s actually my first! Before the iPhone days, I had a non-flippy Nokia 8210. And I loved it dearly.) It cost me $14.99 on Amazon. One big problem. My dinky new phone knows nothing of iMessage! Light of my life! This project assumes that you’re an iCloud u...

Ungluing “Contracts of Adhesion”. October 30th, 2014 Comments Off on Ungluing “Contracts of Adhesion”. I gave a presentation on contracts of adhesion last night, as the final project for my Introduction to Cybernetics and the Foundations of Systems Design. Course at SVA IxD. Here it is! So… what’s a contract of adhesion. Or, on the back of event or transportation tickets. We’re bound by this agreement, yet we have no idea it exists. Here’s a cybernetic representation of the problem. February 21st, 2014 • permalink. I turned 29 last week. I entered my thirtieth year. It wasn’t the easiest of birthdays, but the invisible countdown has actually been extremely helpful for me. I’ve been more productive since January 1st than I had been in perhaps all of 2013. The nagging call of my thirties haunts my every lazy impulse. February 2nd, 2014 • permalink. Conveniently, it appears that the 2127 calendar is backwards-compatible with 2014. Calendar for some bleak futurism. At Things We Make.

I gave a presentation on contracts of adhesion last night, as the final project for my Introduction to Cybernetics and the Foundations of Systems Design. Course at SVA IxD. Here it is! So… what’s a contract of adhesion. In brief, it’s a contract in which one party dictates all the terms, and the other party has absolutely no power to negotiate. It might be a foreign term, but we come across the concept all the time. Here’s a cybernet...

Things We Make » Pixel Perfect

http://www.thingswemake.com/pixel-perfect

July 9th, 2014 Comments Off on Pixel Perfect. Today, I helped bury my dear friend Chloe Weil. I first met Chloe thirteen years ago, in an elective high school health ed course called “Death and Dying.” Remembering that makes me laugh now, darkly. There was something dreadfully apropos about it then, and it’s even more devastatingly perfect now. She will stop you in your tracks. Light Bulbs and Lasers.

Josh Sucks

This is a blog about how very, very much my office-mate sucks. Friday, August 19, 2005. Josh Sucks Open Thread. Posted by Josh Sucks @ 12:09 AM. Tuesday, August 16, 2005. Josh sucks because it took him an absurdly long time to find the wheels to his chair. Josh returned to the office this morning, and a boisterous scavenger hunt ensued. The pictures speak for themselves, which is lucky since I still can't find a good way to caption them. Posted by Josh Sucks @ 1:01 PM. Friday, August 12, 2005. Friday mar...

About Fight and Fish. I’ve Got a New Blog: Therewasthistime.com. April 29, 2013. It’s been a long time since I’ve posted any new short stories on Rough Draft. But, I’ve got a good excuse: I was writing a YA novel called The Soundtrack. The novel is finished and is being edited by an editor who I feel will help to make it a success. In the mean time, however, I’ve started a new blog which I hope will be entertaining: http:/ therewasthistime.com/. June 16, 2011. I bet you wish you could take about a year o...
