A Journey to Shodan: My First Seminar.
http://journeytoshodan.blogspot.com/2012/11/my-first-seminar.html
Tuesday, November 6, 2012. Two weeks ago I travelled to Bellevue Washington with my Sensei’s and three other students to attend my first ever Shotokan Karate seminar, which was taught by Sensei Kyle Funakoshi and Shihan Funakoshi. The session lasted and hour and a half, and I wish it could have been longer. I learned so many new things, mostly small adjustments to Kata and tweaks to stances, but I definitely left the Seminar a better Karateka. Highlight of the day:. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
A Journey to Shodan: A Slippery Slope.
http://journeytoshodan.blogspot.com/2012/07/slippery-slope.html
Monday, July 16, 2012. Lately, Karate has been taking a back seat to my increasingly busy schedule. Before my Shodan grading, training was priority #1 for obvious reasons. I was at the Dojo four days a week, staying late after class and committed to polishing every technique. After it was over, I breathed a huge sigh of relief. That every moment of my life could easily be consumed. What I really need to do though, is go to Karate, it is my me. Lately I've been learning a lot of new Kata -. I will not all...
A Journey to Shodan: March 2012
http://journeytoshodan.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Wednesday, March 14, 2012. I'm currently in South Africa and prior to arriving, my Sensei had contacted a few local Dojo's to request permission for me to participate in some classes. Last night was my first of these two classes. I went in expecting high calibre Karate, simply from the profile online, and was looking forward to a new experience. Well, for better or worse, I got what I was looking for in this Brown/Black belt class - 13 black belts and 3 brown belts. After warm up, we began with the repet...
A Journey to Shodan: November 2011
http://journeytoshodan.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 22, 2011. Well, the date has been set for my Shodan grading – Friday, February 24. When training through the ranks you know that if you stick with it the day will eventually come, but it always feels so far off. It is officially 94 days off for me. Requirements and things to remember:. Kime, and don’t let my lead knee fall in as I push off back foot. As long as I practice ‘ from the ground up. I guess it does come down to caring what other people think, and assuming people expect someon...
A Journey to Shodan: What it's like to hit something.
http://journeytoshodan.blogspot.com/2013/03/what-its-like-to-hit-something.html
Thursday, March 21, 2013. What it's like to hit something. I've spent a lot of time giving an invisible enemy the one-two punch. After all these years, I still need to remind myself during basics and Kata that there is supposed to be someone. On the receiving end of each technique; I'm not meant to just punch and kick the air. In order to do it with feeling, it must be done with intent. I hope I never have to use what I've learned, but even as a Shodan I sometimes doubt my ability. Do I really.

A blog to plan, document and analyse my training as I countdown to my karate shodan grading in 2011. Tuesday, 24 May 2011. Sports Massage - ouch! I have a recurring quads injury in my right thigh. This 'pulled muscle' injury goes back about 8 weeks now and keeps getting better and then recurring again. It recurred again last week and has bothered me a lot during the last 3 karate classes. Anyway, I have just returned from this sports massage and I can confirm that it is not for the faint hearted! He was ...

A blog to plan, document and analyse my training as I countdown to my karate shodan grading in 2011. Thursday, 28 April 2011. Training review - flowing kata! I've managed to get back to some useful training this week. There has been no karate classes at all this week due to the Easter break (and my instructor enjoying a break in Tuscany) so it has seemed even more important to do some training at home. So doing it this way has given me more practice. However, it is still important to do the kata with...

A blog to plan, document and analyse my training as I countdown to my karate shodan grading in 2011. Thursday, 9 June 2011. Some nutritional advice needed. I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice about what food/drink supplies I should take with me on my grading? I will take plenty of water, but what about a flask of coffee or energy drinks? My appetite may be suppressed during the grading due to adrenaline levels but I know I must eat something. I'd really appreciate your advice and suggestions.

Countdown to Shodan: Training progress - getting a little overwhelmed!
http://countdowntoshodan.blogspot.com/2011/04/training-progress-getting-little.html
A blog to plan, document and analyse my training as I countdown to my karate shodan grading in 2011. Wednesday, 6 April 2011. Training progress - getting a little overwhelmed! I'm not too worried that I'm not doing any fitness training at home because sensei has us doing a fair bit in the classes. Most classes we have 2 or 3 rounds of push ups, sit ups, burpees, star jumps, straight leg raising etc, as well as some stretching exercises so I'm still doing that kind of stuff. 6 April 2011 at 08:13. Journey to Shiloh
Wednesday, July 1, 2015. 14th Anniversary at our Little Brown House. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. It was 14 years ago that we woke up for the first time in our new home. It was a dream come true! We had prayed for months for a little rancher in the country, close to State Farm, most preferably in Downs. We also wanted the land to remind us of our home in Virginia; in other words to have trees, lots of trees! It seemed like an impossible prayer list to be filled, but we believed God!
Journey to Shine - Blog
Do you ever have those days, or even weeks, where you have these grand plans to get so much accomplished, and then something throws you off course, and you don't accomplish nearly as much as you had intended? We all have them, right? Grandiose plans that get knocked off course. That has been my week. It was all knocked off by puke. That's right. I said it. Don't worry. I won't post a picture. I'll leave it to your imagination, but that may even make it worse. NEW YEAR.NEW ME? For months I've had the urge...

Journey to Shodan | My journey to Shodan
My journey to Shodan. Tonight’s a big deal in the dojo. Dignitaries coming in to celebrate a new crop of black belts. They will each receive their official certification as a black belt – exciting stuff for a martial artist. I remember being handed the frame with my certificate in it. A heady experience I’ll cherish as a special memory for the rest of my life. Lately, I’ve been paying more attention to the new students in class. The ones trying out karate for the very first time. And the st...I knew that...

Journey to Silence & Back to Sound
Journey to Silence and Back to Sound. Sunday, January 25, 2015. Earlier this week, Cochlear Americas shared my story. On their blog. The positive response has amazed me. I find it SO interesting that I have gone from hiding behind my hearing loss to opening myself up to the world in such a short amount of time. Though it also makes me feel quite vulnerable, I am grateful to have a voice. Thursday, September 25, 2014. I started a private practice! I know, I know, I am crazy. I have 3 little kids I ado...

The Journey To Simple. One Family's journey toward a simpler, sustainable, prepared life. September 19, 2011. Why your family should own a quality water filter. We’ve blogged plenty of times about water and the need to have access to good, clean, quality drinking water. Something every family in the world should consider is this… Where and how do we get access to good, clean, healthy drinking water? Or how about this… What dependencies are there for us getting this water? Our family has developed our own...
