Wednesday, October 25, 2006. The Slave - origins. Why is this book titled. The second reference to a slave is found at the beginning of the book. Jacob is literally a slave in a foreign country. He is not a free man. His life is decided by his owners; his daily life governed by them. The third reference to being a slave is regarding Jacob’s religion. I think this reference is the deciding reason why Singer named his book. By Singer titling his book. Posted by Laura at 9:14 PM. View my complete profile.

Biblical Foundations: December 2006

Friday, December 08, 2006. Theodicy has always been something I've been interested in, long before I knew it had a name. Raised in a Christian church, I've always had questions about the bad things that claim so many lives. Especially natural disasters or the horrible poverty in places like. And obviously not everyone who died in an earthquake or was starving in poverty was wicked and evil. I would ask why God would let such horrible things happen and nobody could answer to my satisfaction. When the spea...

Tuesday, November 28, 2006. Three more groups enlightened with us on their depictions of different books of the Bible. Once again, I was extremely entertained! Group number FOUR kick started the day with their skit on the story of Ruth through the eyes of Jewish store owners.Joshua was the best looking Jewish girl ever! For a while and all of the things that possibly come out of that situation. The groups also shared some terrific artwork to the music of the Newsboys. Posted by Kimberly @ 8:53 PM. I have...

Http:/ biblicalfoundations.blogspot.com" Justin Burgard. 211 Blogging of the Bible. A literary approach to the Bible for Dr. Sexton's 211 class. Thursday, August 31, 2006. A tradition of seconds? It is difficult to locate in Western literature and history a more charismatic figure than David."- Harold Bloom, The Book of J (pg 41). Interestingly, throughout the book of Genesis, the theme of the second-born being preferred to the first-born crops up again and again. Cain kills his younger brother; why?

Wednesday, December 06, 2006. First of - all the presentations have been really interesting to listen to. But Marlow's on the book of Revelation (with a connection to The Invisible Man. Which I would have been interested in hearing since I've read the book) and the number 666 was very intriguing. However, would a Christian, after so many of the books of the NT talk about "turning the other cheek" and doing good to your neighbor, write an angry book placing the ruler as the antigonist? That's so strange t...

Thursday, September 28, 2006. Dinah and The Red Tent. Today in class we touched briefly (I would have liked a longer discussion) on Dinah and her supposed rape. Did she get raped or was the writer of this particular story conflicted? Dr Sexson talked about how it sounds like there are two different writers of this story - one writer favors Hamar and his love for Dinah whereas the other writer views him as violent, defiler of Jacob's beautiful daughter. Why am I so interested in this story? Yet Dr. Se...

Thursday, August 31, 2006. August 31, 2006 - One of the most important things that needs to be remembered throughout this class is something very simple that is stated in the first chapter of Northrop Frye's biblical mythology, and this is that the word Bible comes from the Greek language meaning. Sometimes we think that the Bible has a couple of aut. Hors and a few editions, when in reality it has millions of each. So the story of doing what was forbiddon is OUR story was a perfect way to end the day...

Thursday, October 26, 2006. Jacob in the book The Slave, really made this idea clear for me. He was just the Jacob of THAT TIME. That got me thinking.is there a Jacob of every time? Is there a Sarah, or Wanda, of every period in time? I don't know. But it is comforting to know that other people are thinking the same things that I am! I am only beginning to wonder who I am replicating at this TIME PERIOD in the world! Other issues that were brough up in class:. We are all simply acting out stories". I kno...

E-Journal for Biblical Foundations of Literature/English 211 at MSU with Dr. Sexson. Tuesday, September 26, 2006. Tuesday: September 26, 2006. To summaries quickly a part of what is happening in this particular story. Now if we take a quick look at the prophet Hosea. The original point I was trying to get at was that if Blake saw Albion married to Jerusalem then I see a parallel between Hosea being married to Israel. For both are marriages representative of place, and both are reflective of. Is a perfect...

E-Journal for Biblical Foundations of Literature/English 211 at MSU with Dr. Sexson. Tuesday, October 24, 2006. Is basically a form of commentary on the Jewish Religion. It goes greatly in depth and I suggest reading the link I have provided on the topic. There are 2 parts to the Talmud: The Mishnah. Which in Hebrew means repetition, and Gemara. Which means to complete or to study (according to wikipedia). These terms linked into today's discussion of "The Slave" by Isaac Bashevis Singer. 3 a : ONLY.
