A resource for TAs in Carleton University's Master of Journalism program. Thursday, October 1, 2009. Materials from discussion groups workshop. Wondering what you missed at the workshop on leading effective discussion groups? You can find the powerpoint slides here. Also, Liz Martin, my always thoughtful and hard-working partner in TA mentor crime, typed up notes on the best take-away tips that came out of the discussions in both workshops. They're copied and pasted below. 8226; Keep in touch with studen...

J-School TA: Interviews and discussion groups: strangely similar.

http://jschoolta.blogspot.com/2009/09/interviews-and-discussion-groups.html

A resource for TAs in Carleton University's Master of Journalism program. Thursday, September 17, 2009. Interviews and discussion groups: strangely similar. As I got ready to run some workshops on effective discussion groups, I realized something. A discussion group is just like an interview. http://jschoolta.blogspot.com/2009/10/professionalism-what-is-it-good-for.html

A resource for TAs in Carleton University's Master of Journalism program. Friday, October 23, 2009. Professionalism: What is it good for? You’re told it’s important. In our classes, we even get graded on it. And when I got the TA mentor position, I was told professionalism is one of the most important things the journalism faculty wants me to help TAs work on. But what is professionalism, anyway? I came across this question. Take responsibility for your mistakes. Don’t complain about other people. All th...

J-School TA: Time management

http://jschoolta.blogspot.com/2009/09/time-management.html

A resource for TAs in Carleton University's Master of Journalism program. Thursday, September 24, 2009. When I met the new MJs last week, managing the insane demands on their time seemed to be their biggest concern. It’s possible that it became their biggest concern because everyone kept telling them about how insanely busy they were going to be until they got freaked out. But nevertheless, I hope this will be a useful topic. Here’s a list of tips. Break tasks up into small chunks. Only touch things once.

New media at old Mizzou - Thoughts on digital media and football at MU

New media at old Mizzou. Thoughts on digital media and football at MU. How not to deal with commenters. I had an interesting though short Twitter conversation with a former student last night. In the interest of not embarrassing her or her employers, I’m going to keep her name out of this; I’ll just call her “@student.” She works at a midsize paper in Texas, and frequently posts frustrations with the commenters the site attracts. Here’s the conversation from last night:. Posted in New media. June 4, 2010.

Reading on the iPhone (Stanza vs. Kindle). I’ve been meaning to write something about long-form reading on the iPhone for a while now, and the recent release of Amazon’s Kindle app. Prompted me to do so. I’ve been using Stanza. JSchool Travels Blog | Just another WordPress.com site

Just another WordPress.com site. August 22, 2010. As a teacher and temporary guardian of my students, I take my job very seriously. I am always cognizant that we are tramping about in the lives of others. And ever vigilant to the effects on my students. In December 2005, my concern was invading the privacy of people too traumatized to defend themselves. On this trip, the concern was intruding on people angered by the damage to livelihood and the beauty of nature around the Gulf. August 22, 2010. To the r...

Did you hear that? Posted by Taryn Gomulinski at 10:38 AM. Tuesday, May 16, 2006. What will I do about insurance? Where am I going to live? The amount of pressure I'm feeling is insane. I'm not even sure I know what I want to do specifically. Posted by Taryn Gomulinski at 12:11 AM. Sunday, February 19, 2006. Never befo...
