Traveling Julia

Check out these pictures! Pictures I posted while in TZ (a bit random). Back in the U.S.A! Brian and I officially finished our Peace Corps Service on November 19, 2010. Then we went to Mafia Island off the coast of Tanzania to relax, swim with whale sharks and snorkel for a few days. Just before Thanksgiving we flew to Cairo, and spent 12 days traveling in Egypt! After Brian flew back to Minnesota on December 17, I continued hanging out, organizing my room and all the things I had sent home over the past...

Traveling Julia: September 2010

http://www.juliaintanzania.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

It's crazy how time has flown by! My headmaster isn't around much, but I prefer it that way. When he is around, he always gives me special treatment - like apologizing to me, in English, at the end of a meeting because it's been entirely in Kiswahili. I've been here for two years! He's hardly around though, so he thinks my Kiswahili is the same as when I arrived and can't tell me apart from a strawberry-blond white girl about my height. Great. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Traveling Julia: January 2010

Oops, I've certainly slacked off in the updating sector - sorry! But very nice, too :). I got a lift into town today from a church car, with a nun and a father. After the nun asked where I was from and I said America, she asked if I was from Minnesota. Even after more than a year here, still a surprise! After Dar, Brian and his parents came to my village for a day before going on to his village, and it was great! I feel like I'm set with packages for now, but I wont suddenly get shy and not ask for somet...

Traveling Julia: February 2010

Walking to the internet in Uwemba, I saw our school carpenter and I have to share: he was wearing a short-sleeved suit jacket (common here) made out of MTA fabric. Yes, those ads on the NYC subway for MTA shirts and pajamas that you thought nobody ever bought, ever? I biked into Njombe on Saturday! Other exciting news is that I have worms! Welcome to make fun.). I told him that I didn't know much about Tanzania before coming here ("not even about Nyerere? You didn't even know one person? When I found out...

Traveling Julia: I fly into Philly Dec. 6th!

http://www.juliaintanzania.blogspot.com/2010/10/i-fly-into-philly-dec-6th.html

I fly into Philly Dec. 6th! About 3 weeks left in village/at school, 4 as a PCV, and 6 until I'm home! Ugh, and that excuse he used - that the students are so lazy - is extremely common and pisses me off to no end. Yes, I agree that some students are lazy. But how on earth does that justify your laziness? It's not a tourist area and the village was just a little village - dirt roads, no electricity, no running water - but it was a beautiful spot, the lake was wonderful for swimming, and I woke up to the ...

Traveling Julia: November 2009

http://www.juliaintanzania.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Turkey Day in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. Happy (almost) Turkey Day! I'll be spending mine proctoring and grading. I'll proctor the math final from 8-11, and after that I'll be trying to force myself to keep on truckin'. So, as you may have guessed, it's finals week! Then I hope to go on a little trip either visit a PCV's school that I haven't been to yet or a town that I haven't been to yet. And what else is on the agenda? We'll all spend a few days on Zanzibar (yay! Since I last wrote, we (myse...

Green, Yellow, Black, and Blue: June 2009

Green, Yellow, Black, and Blue. Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the tradewinds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. Mark Twain. Thursday, June 25, 2009. A Day in the Life. Fighting a heart attack, I walked swiftly to the daladala stand to try to find the one I’d taken. All I knew was it was grayish in color. How to find it? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Tanzania...
