When I first stumbled across this proverb, I was pretty sure it was directed at me. I envisioned some ancient Chinese sage sitting peacefully in his quiet place, thoughtfully penning this proverb on the off chance that, many centuries later, some middle-aged woman would read it and take it to heart, a light would go on, and she would plant her tree.
