By Julie Hodges, RYT, of Awareness Village Yoga and Meditation Center in Incline Village, Nevada. Monday, May 25, 2009. Rising to the Top with Tapas. Tapas is from the root word "tap," which means heat. It's not a temperature type of heat, it's a kind of a "fire in the belly," a desire to meet your goals type of heat. From B.K.S. Iyengar, in "Light on Yoga,". Tapas is the conscious effort to achieve ultimate union with the Divine and to burn up all desires which stand in the way of this goal. A worth...

By Julie Hodges, RYT, of Awareness Village Yoga and Meditation Center in Incline Village, Nevada. Monday, April 27, 2009. I hope you are enjoying these short articles about Yoga philosophy as much as I am enjoying writing them. It is helpful for me to review these philosophical points, looking at my own life and behavior, and seeing my own spiritual progress. Brahmacharya has gotten a bad rap. By Julie Hodges, RYT, of Awareness Village Yoga and Meditation Center in Incline Village, Nevada. Friday, December 30, 2011. For many years I have tossed around the idea of doing B.K.S. Iyengar's asana courses, Appendix 1 of "Light on Yoga." The courses detail 300 weeks of personal practice, as if one were studying asana for the first time all the way to an advanced practitioner. I have the audiobook by Stephen Levine, "A Year to Live." It is an awesome audiobook! I can't wait to see what I will learn!

How do you deal with that discomfort? Do you stop or do you persevere? Do you find a way to be comfortable? One rainy d...
