Luckily we have a Bulgarian wood aficionado on board. On our first night at Moremi we heard lions very close. Botswana - March 2007. Safari as a way of life. Days 2/3: Deception Valley. Arrival in Deception Valley. The roads were neither wet nor slippery. It was very dry, depite still being the rainy season. Middle-aged men need rest. Thank goodness for the water bottles. L'Anglais aimait beaucoup photographier les arbres. This wonderful road went south for 300kms. But we decided to head off to the west instead). Some grumpy old farts. Landrovers apparently roll quite easily. This one didn't, which was good.

Botswana - March 2007. Safari as a way of life. Westward bound. Were these men discussing the Yen carry-trade? No, of course not, they are on holiday. Every now and then the road almost disappeared. But we were ok because the biltong supply, a very small part of which was drying on the dashboard, was as bottomless as Mary Poppins' handbag. Il y avait un peu de sable. This man seems to be repairing a coffee pot. He is brave and strong and wise. A traditional Lion-attracting Botswana ritual.

Trip through Chobe and Kalahari - Feb 2010. Sunday, 28 February 2010. This is the website for our trip to Botswana in February 2010. We drove over 3,500 km in a counterclockwise circuit from Joburg to the Mgadigadi, up to Kasane on the border with Zim, Zambia and Namibia, then SW down to Maun via Ihaha and Savuti. We restocked in Maun an then returned home via the Central Kalahari and Khama. Click on thumbnail images to enlarge. Breakfast on the northern shore of Sowa Pan, Magadigadi. Hammerkop on a hippo.

Botswana 2006: Kalahari/Tsau Hill/Savuti/Chobe. May 5th - 14th 2006. Wednesday, May 17, 2006. Savuti - Ihaha (150km - 4-5 hrs). It appears that a woodchuck can indeed chuck wood. In Ihaha, we camped on the water's edge. Just across the river, Namibia, the Caprivi Strip. The verdant Chobe river: Ellies, fish-eagles, hippos, crocs, lily-trotters, kingfishers, lechwe, puku, leguaans, kudu, impala and buffalo. The last night, and a purple moon. 10 days, way too short. We'll be back.
