The Christian Brethren (CMML) mission work in central Africa covers an area encompassing eastern Angola, north west and northern Zambia, and the south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This work began 100 years ago, and has resulted in over 2000 churches being established as well as a number of hospitals and health clinics (see purple boxes on map). Evangelical Church of Zambia). Kalene Mission Hospital - Nursing School

History of the Kalene School of Nursing. The nursing school was first opened 1969, under the supervision of Hilda Wadsworth, with 420 nurses being trained over 20 years. The school gained a reputation for its high standards and the quality of its graduates. Unfortunately it was closed due to staffing shortages. Following government initiatives (See below) the school was reopened on on 3. March 2008 and is currently training approximately 70 students. Government initiative and funding to reopen the school.

James and Ruth, who were living here previously, have made it a lovely home. It is complete with Kenwood mixer and a Singer sewing machine – what more could a girl ask for? It is nice to be on the mission compound and to feel more part of the community. She is being shared amongst the mission staff and I love it when it’s our turn! We have even been doing some night shifts!

The roads have turned to sand; we are about to do away with our duvet; we can no longer get any milk or dairy products from the farm and I can work up a nice sweat in the time it takes me to walk home from the hospital for lunch. We have had a few visitations from some of the local wildlife over the past month!
