Farsighted

Seek first his kingdom, and his righteousness. Tuesday, August 24, 2010. I miss my Mexican family most on Sundays. When I'm in the States on Sunday, I remember all of these things so clearly. I feel out of place when we don't use liturgy; I crave communion and Spanish songs. Now I'm in a new city, away from both my Mexican family and my biological family, and I'm looking for a new church. I miss you, IGP. Tuesday, June 29, 2010. I've never seen you with your hair up like that. wow! Now I've left Mexico -...

Farsighted: Hermitage

http://www.karen-in-mexico.blogspot.com/2010/04/hermitage.html

Seek first his kingdom, and his righteousness. Saturday, April 3, 2010. I have been apartment- and puppy-sitting for a coworker who has been on vacation for the past two weeks. She has two puppies, named Romeo and Mocha, and though many times I find myself frustrated and overwhelmed by their untrained puppy-ness, I do enjoy having them around. It's been kind of nice, living by myself for this time. Kind of a mini-vacation in that it's definitely a change from my normal routine.

Farsighted: language

http://www.karen-in-mexico.blogspot.com/2010/05/language.html

Seek first his kingdom, and his righteousness. Friday, May 7, 2010. One of the funniest things about speaking two languages is when you say a word from one while talking to someone in the other. For instance, when you're talking to someone in English but they also understand Spanish and so you throw in a verb that expresses better what you're trying to say. Seek first his kingdom, and his righteousness. Saturday, March 13, 2010. I wandered around for a while, getting confused by the lack of straight lines and the undistinguished houses. Finally I found Belén's house and knocked. She called out without looking "I can't go! Thinking that I was going to invite her to club instead of just playing there at her house. She could play, but said her family was leaving soon, so I said we'd just play for a little while. I'm so glad that Toño is still alive, but my hea...

Farsighted: say goodbye

http://www.karen-in-mexico.blogspot.com/2010/06/say-goodbye.html

Seek first his kingdom, and his righteousness. Saturday, June 19, 2010. I have a week left here in Fresnillo. This fall I will be starting a graduate program in the States, so I won't be a club teacher, won't teach piano lessons, won't learn how to make Mexican food from my friends here. I find these last few weeks to be flying by - full of packing and visiting and planning and last minute odds and ends. But I'm so glad to be able to take the time to visit and to say goodbye.

The Resting Rock: Abbi Valentine

http://therestingrock.blogspot.com/2011/02/abbi-valentine.html

Sunday, February 13, 2011. My cousin has a band called Upsidedown Cat. She recently made this fun music video for the song "Abbi Valentine." Since tomorrow is el día de amistad y de amor, I'm posting it so that you can enjoy it. Abbi Valentine official music video. February 13, 2011 at 5:35 PM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Resting Rock: October 2010

http://therestingrock.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 18, 2010. In a junior high Family and Consumer Science class, we were each given a piece of paper with questions dealing with what we would like to do when we grew up. We were supposed to think about what we saw ourselves doing in the future. I sat there and sat there, and I couldn't see myself doing. No, it didn't llamarme la atención. Recently I took a personality test through the Enneagram Institute. Then why am I here? We'll see where I end up. For the time being I will continue c...

The Resting Rock: November 2010

http://therestingrock.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 15, 2010. We were in the northern part of the city, at a dinner party with some friends, and needed to figure out how to cross the river to find the restaurant where her sister was playing. I know the name of the place; can we use your computer to look it up? Well, you can, but I don't have internet.". Quiet for a few seconds. Does anybody have an iPhone? We have a Garmin in our car.". Well, look, here's a big map of the city on the wall.". And the phone number.". Good old Yellow Pages.

The Resting Rock: December 2010

http://therestingrock.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Sunday, December 26, 2010. We were listening to music in my brother's car, driving in to celebrate Christmas with my Grandpa. My brother asks, "If 80 seconds make up a minute, 40 minutes make up an hour, and 20 hours make up a day, how long would that day be? A few seconds later his fiance replies "64,000 seconds.". Thursday, December 23, 2010. One day, though, Timothy was. My favorite Disney princess was Cinderella. It feels a little like betraying my 10-year-old self, as I throw away letters I kept for...

The Resting Rock: March 2010

http://therestingrock.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 31, 2010. I grew up in North Dakota, where the month of March is still tightly gripped in Winter. And yet it's not the same as January or February; the days are getting longer and there's a certain quality on the wind. It's almost like a kiss. A soft, gentle, kiss from Spring even as Winter continues to rule over the northern plains. I took the kiss on the wind as a promise, that something was about to change, and I began to love March. The Resting Rock: plants

http://therestingrock.blogspot.com/2011/08/plants.html

Saturday, August 13, 2011. I've been trying my hand at houseplants this year. The first attempt was about a year ago, with two plants from the supermarket. I just used topsoil from the garden and they dried up while I was gone over Christmas. It's a lot of fun, though, to watch a plant really take off. My little spider plant just sent out a little spiderette! And sometimes you just leave them alone to grow on their own, with water and sun of course. August 18, 2011 at 4:48 AM. The Resting Rock: June 2010

http://therestingrock.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, June 29, 2010. We're still sitting here, waiting, on the tip of Texas. My flight doesn't leave until tomorrow but we wanted to leave time in case of traveling troubles. I'm not used to the water-saturated, super-heated air and I feel lethargic and annoyed outside. Now a tropical storm is rolling in and the rain comes in gusts and cools the air. Friday, June 11, 2010. I've tried putting in mint or cinnamon, but the perennial favorite continues to be just plain hot chocolate. So rich.

The Resting Rock: Be kind to the missionaries

http://therestingrock.blogspot.com/2011/02/be-kind-to-missionaries.html

Saturday, February 19, 2011. Be kind to the missionaries. This is unfortunate. Probably most of us don't have corresponding experiences to be able to really understand what it's like to live cross-culturally and all the highs and lows that come from that. I think that a lot of Christians have a skewed view of missionaries - that they have a particular calling on their life, are more spiritual, trust God more, they know what their life purpose is. This isn't necessarily true. So people become missionaries...

Wednesday, January 26, 2011. When I was a child we had a high chair that you could disassemble into a table and chair. To create the high chair, you set the table on it's side and put the child-sized chair on top. It was easy to put together and take apart. I took a bite of cereal. I think at first I was confused. Dienstag, 10. Januar 2017. Hier also die Geschichte:. Er sieht das kleine Mädchen und belächelt kopfschüttelnd ihr Tun.

Karen in Peru

Monday, January 24, 2011. Already the time has come for me to leave Chupaca. It´s been a very different experience this time. Because I've been here for such a relatively short time and because I've been quite unwell for so much of it and bbecause there's been so much work to do, at times it's been really hard. But definitely worth it. It's brilliant - just as I'd always hoped, now that the project is underway it's developing a momentum all of it's own.
