Distant Wanderings: Sharp knives and hot oil at 1:30 AM
http://distantwanderings.blogspot.com/2008/09/sharp-knives-and-hot-oil-at-130-am.html
Saturday, September 27, 2008. Sharp knives and hot oil at 1:30 AM. The first week of classes went well, I like all my professors and the classes seem interesting so far. Last night we went out with some classmates to celebrate the end of the first week. We started at a friend's house where we watched the debate. We made up our own very flexible rules for a debate drinking game, which included taking a drink any time:. Obama said "Look" at the beginning of a sentence. We felt like it. 3 Put a couple of ta...

Distant Wanderings: Pura Vida, Maje
http://distantwanderings.blogspot.com/2005/10/pura-vida-maje.html
Monday, October 10, 2005. Pura Vida, Maje. But the gas station nearby had clearly seen its share of flat tires and we were on our way in no time. And thankfully Marco is a much more sane driver than Will, so I was able to relax and enjoy the scenery. I've got some great photos from the last few days; hopefully I'll get to upload them soon. But I wanted to keep shouting, "put down the Dummy! It's kind of creepy! But really, I liked this one. It's a bit of a thinker. Where...

Distant Wanderings: Caribbean Life
http://distantwanderings.blogspot.com/2005/09/caribbean-life.html
Saturday, September 24, 2005. For the past five days I ve been experiencing the heat and humidity of the Caribbean coast. On Tuesday morning I left San José for Tortuguero, a long trip which involved two bus rides through the thick tropical forests, and a ride in a small boat from which we saw lots of birds, iguanas and CROCODILES! Big ones with scary looking jaws! Here, and reggae is the music of choice. Viva Bob Marley, mon! Posted by Jess @ 19:43. View my complete profile. For a full selection. Lorrai...

Distant Wanderings: La stagiaire
http://distantwanderings.blogspot.com/2009/06/la-stagiaire.html
Monday, June 22, 2009. I have to say it's a strange thing being an intern. Again at age 33. I have supervised enough student interns in previous jobs to know that the range of capability and initiative can vary greatly from person to person. And I recognized some apprehension at first in the assignment of new tasks, when colleagues wondered just what end of that range I would occupy. Of course, I'm capable of managing my own work, so I don't think they are too worried about me. An accepted part of French...

Distant Wanderings: Colonial Towns
http://distantwanderings.blogspot.com/2005/10/colonial-towns.html
Tuesday, October 25, 2005. Either tomorrow or the next day I am taking off for the Corn Islands in the Caribbean, and so will be without internet access (or heck, even electricity) for a while. Stay tuned for my next post in a week or so. Posted by Jess @ 18:43. View my complete profile. For a full selection. Ludicrosity (aka Mark is Funny). It All Worked Out Conjoint Karyatid. Distant Wanderings: Nica (r) Agua
http://distantwanderings.blogspot.com/2005/10/nica-r-agua.html
Thursday, October 20, 2005. Hmso where were we? I will definitely have to go back sometime in dry season to enjoy it properly. After Monteverde it was time to move northwards into Nicaragua. (Click on the hummingbird for photos from Arenal and Monteverde). All along the way people waved to us from their houses, kids shouted hello and everyone was smiling and extremely friendly. That's been the best part of Nicaragua so far. The Nicas are really welcoming and very nice. One amusing thing is th...Yesterday...

Distant Wanderings: A Supposedly Fun Thing that's Actually Really Fun
http://distantwanderings.blogspot.com/2009/06/supposedly-fun-thing-thats-actually.html
Tuesday, June 30, 2009. A Supposedly Fun Thing that's Actually Really Fun. I am a bit frustrated at work these past few days, dealing with some people who are, let's just say, difficult. I would love to have a big rant about this, but I am aware that public rants about professional issues can sometimes be a little bit harmful to one's career development, so I will keep the details to myself. Is a three-month long project in which people read and discuss the book Infinite Jest. About Maine's annual Lobste...

Distant Wanderings: Photographic evidence
http://distantwanderings.blogspot.com/2008/09/photographic-evidence.html
Saturday, September 20, 2008. It's a quiet weekend here. Nate is in Charlottesville celebrating his friend Nick's 30th birthday, and I am working on my first two papers for school. One is done (and was submitted this afternoon) and the other one should be fairly easy, so it's not a stressful time here. Yesterday was a beautiful day and we hiked up Mt. Wantastiquet, the local peak just across the river in New Hampshire. It was a nice hike and the view was beautiful:. That's my school.). Very well-acted fi...

Distant Wanderings: Camping 2.0
http://distantwanderings.blogspot.com/2009/08/camping-20.html
Monday, August 10, 2009. I've led a nearly non-technological life for the past few weeks, with only occasional access to e-mails and intermittent cellphone coverage, and zero logins to Facebook. It's been great! So we are currently homeless, and having spent all our money in Europe, are living the cheap but wonderful life of meals cooked over the fire and days spent biking or hiking on beautiful trails or walking on rocks by the ocean.
