Kate in Guinea

Sunday, June 7, 2009. Now we can begin working! An island off the coast of Guinea. Some of the group treated ourselves to a trip following our training. It is now mango season, which means people without won't go hungry for the time being. For me, I have a delicious mango whenever I fancy one, as my family has a number of grafted mango trees in their front yard. A waterfall near my city. It's only a trickle now compared to what it will be at the height of the rainy season, so I'm told. The standards here...

Kate in Guinea: January 2009

http://www.kateinguinea.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 1, 2009. This is the market in Forecariah which is open every day until around 5ish. We head here during our lunch break to buy food, snacks, laundry soap, fabric, tailoring services, etc. We also have a business (mine is a pharmacy) in this area that we visit to study and ask questions. Our business advising classes are in an opening under some big mango trees. There are no walls, no air conditioning. Some of the distractions include children shouting Fote! Kate in Guinea: Visuals from Training

http://www.kateinguinea.blogspot.com/2009/02/visuals-from-training.html

Thursday, February 5, 2009. The kitchen at my host family's house in our training city. During meal preparations, sauce is usually cooked in a big pot on the right and rice in a big pot on the right. They jam sticks in from all three sides to get a roaring fire going. Amazingly, the dried roof never catches fire, at least from what I observed. This is the duck living with my host family to keep my sister healthy. She told me she faints sometimes, perhaps epilepsy? This is a view of the well. Opinions and...

You can email me at the same gmail address I've been using. Also, you can send me letters and packages. There are a lot of suggestions out there regarding this. Below are some details I borrowed from someone who went to the trouble of listing out the various suggestions. Thanks Dorian! Kate [last name], PCV. 2 Insur...

A chronicle of my Peace Corps odyssey in Guinea and Mali, West Africa from application to interview to nomination to invitation to service to evacuation to transfer and beyond! Follow me on my grand adventure. Wednesday, May 26, 2010. So we started the latrine project today in earnest. Yay! I was expecting disaster. Under the Burkinabe Sun: March 2009

http://jabarbour.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Under the Burkinabe Sun. There was an error in this gadget. 12 Hours, 100Km (60 miles), and Other Chose. I use 'chose' as the title because that means things. Just another part of my combination of French, English and PC slang which I realize makes understanding me sometimes rather complicated. My apologies. Just ask me to clarify. As for photos, I have augmented somewhat so here is the link: http:/ picasaweb.google.com/jabarbour/Guinea. Site, Plows and Windowless Bush Taxis. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Under the Burkinabe Sun. There was an error in this gadget. I Survived Hot Season! Its going to be hot! I figured I could survive. Which I did, barely. Returning back to Djibo. Also, in an effort to continue the wonderful availability of mangos. Red But, it was the first time in more than a month and a half I had seen a temperature of 95 degrees at 5pm. Despite the heat, I still managed to do some interesting things and now that its 'cooled' off, I've seen my first rain and things are turning just a litt...

Kate in Guyana

The views expressed in this weblog are the author's own and do not necessarily reflect those of VSO. Saturday, 24 July 2010. Back home after the trip to Tobago. Yesterday we were swimming on the beach at Pigeon Point, which is where all the film stars go - white sand, palm trees, pelicans diving (and sand flies). Guyana is like the 1940s, Tobago is like the 1960s, so coming back to the UK is a bit surreal. They say it is hot and humid here, but I felt cold this morning for the first time for a year.
