Kate in Library School

Kate in Library School. Wednesday, June 29, 2016. And in the end. Social media seems to me to be a natural tool for librarians to use. At its crux, librarianship is about connecting people with the information they need and the tools they need to use it. Since a tremendous majority of Americans are connected to the internet and engage in social media on one platform or another it is clear that librarians need to be prepared to use those same tools. Kate in Library School: September 2014

http://kateinlibraryschool.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Kate in Library School. Monday, September 15, 2014. My biggest problem in creating a website comes not from the technical process, but from the creative process. I struggle to come up with content that I think will interest people, or which will even interest me. Which was constructed for the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Kate in Library School: August 2014

http://kateinlibraryschool.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Kate in Library School. Saturday, August 30, 2014. This isn't directly related to LS560, but I thought the timing was interesting. The book store that I work for occasionally, Book Soup, is an independent store in West Hollywood, and I've been working there for almost six years. Many of the books that fill the shelves have recommendations written by staff members, and I've written my fair share. One of my briefest recs is for The name of the rose. What a delightful interpretation of the librarian's role!

What is the Book? Musings about Theological Libraries and the Book(s) Inside Them. Shifting Paradigms of Knowledge, or a Defense of Wikipedia as a Pedagogical Tool. As librarians, it is almost second nature for us to devalue Wikipedia. Frequently we remind students that Wikipedia is not a tool for research. We harp on students not to cite Wikipedia. In their academic work. We cite famous examples. Or who is to say that he’s telling me what actually happened and not his idiosyncratic take on things? A sec...

Sunday, November 9, 2008. The Los Angeles AIDS WALK. My first exposure to HIV/AIDS was when I lived in downtown New York City with my friend Fidel, more than a decade ago. His brother had been HIV positive for quite a long time. I’m not exactly sure for how long. Fidel came from a family of four boys. This is the reason that participating in the Los Angeles AIDS Walk. Was so special to me. And this is how it all happened. I was hanging out in a great little coffee shop. I picked up LA Weekly. Not to soun...

Tiwonana.Warm Heart of Africa Here I Come! Thursday, May 29, 2008. Jennifer, Tim (the next researcher looking for gender information), Phil and I went to a country club in Lilongwe the last week and to me that was the biggest culture shock. I mean, what is the point of an overseas assignment if you just hang out a place like that all the time? It was very very odd. Just like being at a country club anywhere. Somehow, that was stranger than coming home. Maybe I wasn't gone long enough :). By the people I ...
