August | 2012 | Katharine gets wet

Today, it’s not just me. 21/08/2012 at 8:49 pm Posted in Uncategorized. Lots of people want to swim there when it’s hot. If I like swimming so much that I write a blog about it, it would be really, really bad form to complain about other people discovering they like it too, wouldn’t it? Exercising sanity’ one of my twitter contacts replied). It really is good that people are using the lido and realising what fun swimming is. And maybe they’ll come when the air temperature’s not 31 degrees! Quick dips ...

Ponds on the Wireless. 21/07/2012 at 11:08 am Posted in Uncategorized. Available from the Owl Bookshop and lots of others, hint hint. Would make an excellent birthday present for any keen outdoor swimmer who turns 40 this year, just sayin’) about the lifeguard who shouted at regular intervals so the topless sunbathers would turn onto their backs, until somebody knitted nipple covers for them. Available on Iplayer until next Thursday. Leave a Comment ». Feed for comments on this post. Pool pictures –...
A slow crawl | Katharine gets wet

23/03/2013 at 3:50 pm Posted in Uncategorized. Get out of my way! After a work- and PhD-related sabbatical, I intend to be back blogging regularly. Since I last blogged I’ve swum in some interesting new places: Mojacar on the Almeria coast, The Shelbourne hotel in Dublin, Pennyhill Park spa, the new Ironmonger row (including the spa plunge pool) and, er, Kings Hall leisure centre in Clapton. Quick Dip: Windy
http://quickdip.blogspot.com/2014/10/windy.html
Tuesday, 21 October 2014. A week away in Turkey (I'll do a post on that later) and Autumn has really arrived at Tooting. I did swim yesterday but had no time to post pictures. This morning was bright and breezy, clouds scudding across the skies and leaves falling. It's still quite warm in the water, about 14°C. Katherine makes her way though the leaves blown in overnight. Although they have a nice colour the leaves are still quite scratchy and get stuck to my goggles. I did an eighteen length swim.
Quick Dip: February 2014
http://quickdip.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, 27 February 2014. The daffodils by the winter entrance are now beginning to flower, spring is on the way despite another cold snap forecast. Tweleve lengths again, eight with Richard who hasn't been in for a week. I wanted to catch Alfonso and Giles swimming together but Giles pulled up short, I like the shot anyway. Giles has the speed but they both swim beautifully. Another swimmer with excellent technique Jonathan Cowie was smoothly gliding up and down the lido as I left. Of course I could!
Quick Dip: March 2014
http://quickdip.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Monday, 31 March 2014. These are pictures from the archive, I didn't take any new ones this morning. It was sunnier than this morning but very cold in 2013. There was ice on the pool! Looking back the temperature was 1°C in 2013, 11.5°C in 2012 and 10°C in 2011. I didn't get the official temperature this morning but I guess it's probably below 9°C despite the warm week-end. Thursday, 27 March 2014. Post sauna Elizabeth indulged me by jumping in - Bombs away! Wednesday, 26 March 2014. I joined Richard aft...
Quick Dip: October 2013
http://quickdip.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, 31 October 2013. It was a dark and stormy morning, I was swimming with Richard and Alfonso when the headless swimmer of Tooting Bec Lido appeared out of nowhere going at a supernatural speed through the water. I managed to get this one picture, a bit blurry (aren't they always). I think we'll have to call Scooby Doo to solve this mystery. Wednesday, 30 October 2013. Another sunny morning, the air was cold after a clear night. Richard joined me for a twelve length swim. Tuesday, 29 October 2013.
Quick Dip: Swimming with leaves
http://quickdip.blogspot.com/2014/10/swimming-with-leaves.html
Tuesday, 28 October 2014. Another morning of bright clear skies, the falling leaves filling the water. A warm Autumn day is probably my favourite time for a swim. The water is getting a little fresh, but eighteen lengths were still possible with out too many shivers. Chris and Sue in sync, the deep end was still in shadow. he water must be below 14°C now. Alfonso only joined me for my last two lengths, the pool was quite full due to the weather and half term I guess. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Quick Dip: October 2014
http://quickdip.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, 30 October 2014. Warm if grey weather today, I was joined after a few length by Alfonso. Then I noticed The Aquatic Ape also speeding along parallel to us. After a few more lengths Carl dropped out and got out his camera taking some terrific pictures you can see here. Wednesday, 29 October 2014. Not so sunny today, still warmish though. I like this action shot of Pip racing Batch down the pool. I swam eighteen lengths, fourteen with Alfonso. We must have been a bit quicker than Gus. Alfonso onl...
Quick Dip: November 2014
http://quickdip.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 4 November 2014. It's a while since I had an Elizabeth picture, she seems to swim a little later than me at the moment but she hasn't forgotten how to pose for a great shot. It was a chilly morning, a faint steam was rising off the water. Amazing, given that the water temperature is about 13°C. Who is that with a mask of bubbles? It's Fred of course! He got in about the same time as me. Ian joined us in the water a little later, I think he's much quicker than last year. Do buy a copy.

Quick Dip: Daylight saving
http://quickdip.blogspot.com/2014/10/daylight-saving.html
Monday, 27 October 2014. With the clocks going back it seems much lighter than usual when I reach the pool. It helps that it's sunny and really quite warm still as well. But we're nearly in November, the leaves are gathering and the water is chilly at 14°C. I manage 18 lengths, the last four with Alfonso. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Katharine gets wet | Swimming in London and beyond
13/04/2013 at 5:02 pm Posted in Uncategorized. Paradise, but can you really swim in it? The beautiful beach in the photo above possessed clean white sands, blood-warm water and breathtaking views, but I mostly just jumped between waves because swimming wasn’t really an option. But It’s the sea! Of being a bather rather than a swimmer, the sea will suit you. Otherwise you’re better off in a lake. Or Tooting Lido. 23/03/2013 at 3:50 pm Posted in Uncategorized.
