百人一首 | A Year in Japan

A Year in Japan. From Albany, NY to Hachinohe, Japan. So while I was in Japan my host dad gave me a set of 百人一首 (with a tape! These poems really made me appreciate Japanese literature and history more. If you want to learn more about Hyakunin Isshu, I would recommend watching Chihayafuru. Which focuses on the game itself and Utakoi. Which focuses on the history behind the poems. You can watch both of them on crunchyroll. 1 秋の田の かりほの庵の 苫をあらみ わが衣手は 露にぬれつつ. 2 春過ぎて 夏来にけらし 白妙の 衣ほすてふ 天の香具山. A Year in Japan. From Albany, NY to Hachinohe, Japan. February 8, 2011. This is a translation of the speech I gave on January 21st to my host club. It took about 3 hours to write, but only lasted 10 minutes in Japanese. Oh well. It has been exactly 5 months since I arrived in Japan! Time sure went by fast! Since it has been a while since my last speech, I want to share my experience of my school trip and New Years. On November 24, we set off for Tokyo. From there, we took a plane to Nagasaki. Silent Temper | A blog of poetry by Katie Achilli
A blog of poetry by Katie Achilli. April 23, 2011. Nails bent and hammers brittle,. We build our wall of faults. Bones broken, hair torn,. Our will to succeed dims. With every breath we struggle to take. Fear and shame churn in our stomachs,. Like sour milk and acid. No more difference between tears and blood,. We continue to build. Brick by brick,. We cling to hope that we can climb over,. But we sink with rocks in our pockets,. Descending to where our opportunities lie dead. March 28, 2011. Katie Achil...
