Africa? I thought you were joking

I thought you were joking. Do us a Kindness. Monday, February 11, 2013. As our time here is quickly coming to an end, we started saying our good-byes. Good-byes are always hard, and here it is especially hard because we never know when we will see people again. We went back to our village to say good bye and it was bitter sweet. However, there are also things we will miss:. Ridiculous, funny stories. How anything goes – (Examples: A Gambain has a phone that the digit 0 doesn’t work on it. However, I have...

Africa? I thought you were joking: May 2012

http://www.kenburnerdothegambia.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

I thought you were joking. Do us a Kindness. Wednesday, May 2, 2012. I thought it would be a good time to write a Ben post and let those of you who are anxiously waiting know how my work with the women’s tie-dye (henceforth known as tie and dye) group is going. As you might have expected from a genius of my caliber, we have had a 400% increase in our assets since we started about 8 months ago. Our first three jobs just involved dying fabrics and solid colors and selling those. The village we went to is h...

Africa? I thought you were joking: July 2012

I thought you were joking. Do us a Kindness. Tuesday, July 24, 2012. 80 Kilometer Coastline Hike. I joined three girls in an 80 km (50 mile) hike along the whole Gambia Coastline in the beginning of July. It took us about 3 ½ days and although tough on our feet, shoes, and legs, we had a lot of fun. And we got to see the Gambian coastline in its entirety. We finished on the north bank in a national park called Ginak Island. None of us had been there and we stayed with a Peace Corps employee’s family.

I thought you were joking. Do us a Kindness. Tuesday, August 23, 2011. On an Island in the Sun. We left the Gambia for the first time since January last week! To the islands off the West African coast called Cape Verde. It was really beautiful, with good food, beaches, and mountains. We went with two other volunteers and had a great time. We traveled to Dakar, Senegal by car, spent the night at the Peace Corps transit house in Dakar, woke up the next morning and flew out of Senegal to Cape Verde. The nex...

Africa? I thought you were joking: January 2013

http://www.kenburnerdothegambia.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

I thought you were joking. Do us a Kindness. Wednesday, January 2, 2013. Back in November, we used the last of our vacation time as volunteers to travel to Guinea. We traveled with 4 other volunteers overland from Gambia, through Senegal to the mountainous region of Guinea. Guinea is a beautiful country with green hills and waterfalls everywhere. The people that live there are Pular which are also in the Gambia but slightly different. Traveling in West Africa is difficult, especially for white people.

Africa? I thought you were joking: March 2012

http://www.kenburnerdothegambia.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

I thought you were joking. Do us a Kindness. Thursday, March 22, 2012. Things have calmed down now and we have settled back into our village. Ben settled back into managing the bee project with Luis, and I was just approved for my library and resource project at the school. We started working on it 2 days ago! Recently we helped Luis harvest a wild hive from Luis’s friends’ restaurant in the city. All three of us ‘got got’ (stung) but it was still fun and the bees are doing well at the farm. I have also ...

It is yours to bring forth from it sweet music or confused sounds" Kahlil Gibran. Saturday, July 21, 2012. Though these are posted, I figured I would give a little time to my time outside of the Gambia for once. The greatest experience of all was elevation, something you miss when you live in a river delta. Yes for the spectacle it is, we went to a bull fight.

My Peace Corps Experience in The Gambia. Why the Peace Corps? Sunday, March 10, 2013. World Read Aloud Day. Was World Read Aloud Day. I’ve been reading non-stop with my teachers, so this day couldn’t have come at a better time. It was a great way to start transferring the knowledge the teachers have been receiving to the students. For many teachers, it was the first time they had read a children’s book aloud to their class. Unfortunately, there is not a reading curriculum in The Gambia. Then he wants a h...
