Walking Snake: A New Site and a Poem
http://josiahbancroft.blogspot.com/2011/11/new-site-and-poem.html
November 21, 2011. A New Site and a Poem. I've launched a new site which has more examples of my work, including a chapter from my new novel. The site is josiahmedia.com, and you can visit it here. I've never written a poem about turkeys and reindeer, and so I have nothing of the season to offer you. Instead, here's a poem about a lost dog. Posted, Lost Dog. Friendly. Answers to Ernie. Black spot on white back. Hind left leg missing. Short hair. Disappeared near Spring and. Briarwood. Reward. Eats.

Walking Snake: Karl Shapiro, Consultant in Poetry, 1946-'47
http://josiahbancroft.blogspot.com/2011/01/karl-shapiro.html
January 11, 2011. Karl Shapiro, Consultant in Poetry, 1946-'47. The fifth Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress arrived on the scene with a clear sense of purpose. Karl Shapiro's poems had profound subjects: classism, war, anti-semitism, and third-world exploitation. In general, he explored these topics from a vantage very different from the previous Consultants, who alternated between professor and confessor. Shapiro wrote from the mob rather than the lectern. But only keep you with them all.

Walking Snake: Open Season
http://josiahbancroft.blogspot.com/p/open-season.html
Summer doesn’t end;. It spills as an upended. Cinder pail, hot coals. Mixed with cold clinkers,. And like any muddle, it turns. Sinister the more it sprawls. So the world conspires. To end before fall. Four boys drowned late last summer, one at a time. In three bodies of water. One stood on his head. At the bottom of the public pool. One floated,. A shadow, about the bridge’s stout legs,. And the lake ate the other two. The Rotary raised funds. For signs that read: Swim at Your Own Risk,. Until the last ...

Walking Snake: Louisiana Walking Snakes
http://josiahbancroft.blogspot.com/p/louisiana-walking-snakes.html
The swollen ankle of Louisiana is silted. So furiously, I could sow pea gravel. Upon the rutted crown of our levee,. And grow a new Alp. Every hundred. Years, unannounced, the River bunches. Her dark sheets, and rolls from her bed. Straddled up on the barn ridge,. Luke sweats out mosquito swarms,. Lords the whole frowned curve of our. Earth I peel eggs for supper, wait for. My seedling mountain to rise through. To the white end of air, up high enough. That blue flies shrivel, rat snakes. Simple template&...

Walking Snake: Robert Lowell, Consultant in Poetry, 1947-'48
http://josiahbancroft.blogspot.com/2011/02/robert-lowell.html
February 22, 2011. Robert Lowell, Consultant in Poetry, 1947-'48. In this post I examine the early works of the poet, especially. Lord Weary’s Castle , which was published just before he became the Consultant in Poetry. I admit to being rebuffed by Lowell. The lag between entries in my series on the Consultants in Poetry/Poet Laureates is the result of my repeatedly ricocheting off the surface of Lowell’s early catalog, especially the nut of Lord Weary’s Castle. In part, Lowell’s preference for the...

Walking Snake: Elizabeth Bishop, Consultant in Poetry, 1949-'50
http://josiahbancroft.blogspot.com/2011/04/elizabeth-bishop-consultant-in-poetry_30.html
April 30, 2011. Elizabeth Bishop, Consultant in Poetry, 1949-'50. My continuing series on the Consultants in Poetry, or Poet Laureate as the honor would later be known, continues here with the eighth Consultant, Elizabeth Bishop. I have generally focused my comments on her early work: those poems that appeared in. North and South (1946) and. A Cold Spring (1955) which were published around the time of her Consultantship.). We’d rather have the iceberg than the ship,. Although it meant the end of travel.

Walking Snake: October 2011
http://josiahbancroft.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
October 24, 2011. I wrote "All There" about the Invisible Man, who was one of the original super heroes, cursed and blessed by his powers. In Wells' book, the Invisible Man is driven mad by his invisibility and his desire to be visible again, but I wondered if the reverse couldn't be true, too. If the Invisible Man suddenly became visible, maybe he would turn paranoid and vain. The invisible man becomes visible. While picking up a paper. He has never paid for before. And the man at the newsstand. Subscri...
