Blog for 19th Century American Literature. Monthly Archives: October 2013. Geography III- Elizabeth Bishop. October 29, 2013. The epigraph seemed out of place in a book of poetry; thus, I chose to ignore it and began reading the poems. As I read I found that the epigraph was not meaningless (of course). Bishop subtlety and adeptly creates meaning within her writing which may not be evident upon first reading. Geography takes on a deeper meaning. Much Ado About Nothing. October 17, 2013. Jacob Williams' Blog. Response to Emerson’s Address. Higher Laws and Brute Neighbors. September 30, 2015. Thoreau decides that life becomes a question of consciously feeding or starving these two sides, focusing on one to the detriment of the other. He explains, “We are all sculptors and painters, and our material is our own flesh and blood and goes. Any nobleness begins at once to refine a man’s features, any means or sensuality to imbrute them” (242). Experience and Emerson’s Evolution. On Experience a...

Response to Emerson’s Address | Jacob Williams' Blog
https://jrwksuenged.wordpress.com/about
Jacob Williams' Blog. Response to Emerson’s Address. Response to Emerson’s Address. It is interesting to me though that he refers to the summer in the past tense, as in it has been. This is especially interesting because the speech was delivered on a July 15. Not even a month into the summer itself. Perhaps Emerson’s summer is more of a metaphorical summer, a season of ease or tranquility. A luxury. Thomas Paine famously used summer and sunshine in his pamphlet. August 26, 2015 at 4:57 pm. Coverdale: Rel...
