Existing search engines that accompany common domain Arabic editions or databases currently offer no way to automatically detect reuse, such as quotation, paraphrase, or allusion. KITAB’s team is developing algorithms to investigate the following types of reuse in Arabic. With our 2015 pilot, we have begun with the first use case and are applying for funding to work on the others. 1 - Discover relationships between texts:. KITAB provides a digital tool-box and a forum for discussions about Arabic texts. We wish to empower users to explore Arabic texts in completely new ways and to expand the frontiers of knowledge about one of the world’s largest and most complex textual traditions. To use our corpus and search tools, please get in touch with us via our contact form. At present, we are a closed community of users. We are applying for funding that would allow us to bring our data and sources into the public domain.

The Arabic textual tradition is enormous thousands of texts pertaining to all aspects of cultural history survive for the period from 750 to 1500. These are widely available in open-access digital formats on the internet. Hundreds or perhaps thousands more survive in manuscript collections across the Middle East.
