Kitchen Vignettes by Aubergine: March 2015

http://kitchenvignettes.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

March 06, 2015. Beef and Stout Stew… and hellos from Mexico. I made this a couple of weeks ago, on a very. Snowy day, right before I made my get-away. It's a simple meal that hits the spot on a cold winter's day: grass-fed beef stewed in a whole bottle of dark beer with mushrooms and carrots, served over mashed potatoes. I don't usually do this whole running away from winter thing. So I bought a plane ticket, shoveled out my car (this photo was actually taken right before the insane mega snowdumps. What ...

Kitchen Vignettes by Aubergine: Butterflied Grilled Cornish hen (or chicken)

http://kitchenvignettes.blogspot.com/2015/08/butterflied-grilled-cornish-hen-or.html

August 05, 2015. Butterflied Grilled Cornish hen (or chicken). To get quick, even cooking and the most tender meat possible. (And that's saying a lot since Cornish hen is already incredibly moist and tender). As a teenager, I always had a song that embodied the feeling of each summer, usually whatever song was being played on the radio the most. I still do that. (In case you're wondering, this is my summer 2015. In Congress which was like a punch in the stomach. In case you missed my last post. By big fo...

Kitchen Vignettes by Aubergine: July 2014

http://kitchenvignettes.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

July 28, 2014. Shh, don't tell anyone, but there's a little song that goes off inside my head when I'm eating flowers. It's the flower eating song! I like this song… as you may have noticed from my posts on Rose Petal Coconut Semifreddo. I think it's the same song I used to sing when I was little and building elf castles in the woods. It's the song of magical things. The petals are delicious in salads and you can eat the young shoots of the plant, and even boil the tubers like potatoes! But before you go...

Kitchen Vignettes by Aubergine: On surviving Mother's Day + Honey Fennel Gingerbread

http://kitchenvignettes.blogspot.com/2015/05/on-surviving-mothers-day-and-honey.html

May 12, 2015. On surviving Mother's Day Honey Fennel Gingerbread. Yup Some years are rougher than others. It's funny how grief doesn't follow a linear or logical path. It's been close to 6 years since my mom died, and I'm still at times whammed in the gut, usually when I least expect it. Most of the time, I'm fine. As Hope Edelman says in this year's. Mother's Day Letter to Motherless Daughters: " A mother-sized hole will always exist in your life. But as the author Abigail. Elebrating me. I try to r...

Chicken Lady's Great Adventures: Everything's Coming Up Babies!

http://chickenladysgreatadventures.blogspot.com/2015/05/everythings-coming-up-babies.html

Chicken Lady's Great Adventures. Monday, May 11, 2015. Everything's Coming Up Babies! Saturday evening my order of Silver Penciled Rocks arrived, fifteen healthy little chicks running about peeping and pooping and generally being healthy little bits of fluff. I am so happy to have chickens back on the Farmlette. It's felt rather odd not having any. I think I miscounted by a week.but luckily I had her nest box all ready to go, and she was delighted to hop in and get to work:. Finally, A Chicken Tractor!

Chicken Lady's Great Adventures: Just Waiting for Summer

http://chickenladysgreatadventures.blogspot.com/2015/05/just-waiting-for-summer.html

Chicken Lady's Great Adventures. Wednesday, May 20, 2015. Just Waiting for Summer. The little back deck is swept, the new chairs and table are ready. All I need now is a jug of margaritas, a tall cool glass with an umbrella in it, and a handy lawn boy to wave a giant palm leaf in my general direction. Ah, summer lounging at its finest. All I need is summer to arrive. Thanks for taking the time to read and leave a comment! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Just Call Me the Rabbit Pimp of Prairie Farm.

Chicken Lady's Great Adventures: Sweet, Delicious Peas...

http://chickenladysgreatadventures.blogspot.com/2015/05/sweet-delicious-peas.html

Chicken Lady's Great Adventures. Sunday, May 3, 2015. Sweet, Delicious Peas. I love fresh garden peas. There is nothing better than heading out into the garden, and harvesting a fat pod, sliding the fresh sweet peas out and onto my tongue with a dirt-covered thumb. Chicken Lady's Great Adventures: Of Garlic and Onions

http://chickenladysgreatadventures.blogspot.com/2015/05/of-garlic-and-onions.html

Chicken Lady's Great Adventures. Monday, May 4, 2015. Of Garlic and Onions. The garlic is going gang-busters, daily getting taller and more luscious. I think every bulb has grown green shoots, which is just wonderful. If everything goes well, I should have a terrific crop of garlic to harvest in July. They just look so terribly weenie when they are first planted out, don't they? Oh well. Soon enough, they'll be fat and happy and growing away into beautiful bulbs. Chicken Lady's Great Adventures: Naked Gardening Day

http://chickenladysgreatadventures.blogspot.com/2015/05/naked-gardening-day.html

Chicken Lady's Great Adventures. Saturday, May 2, 2015. So, did you know today is an extra special gardening day? Yep, it is. Today, across the globe, gardeners are gathering in their respective plots and.ahem.getting down to the basics, so to speak. That's right, today people are outside, in the garden, in the buff. Whoo Mosquitoes everywhere, rejoice! Umm No. Well, no. I'm actually going to be out in the yard, clothed and sunscreened and hatted against the bright spring sun. Finally, A Chicken Tractor!

Chicken Lady's Great Adventures: Perennial Corner

http://chickenladysgreatadventures.blogspot.com/2015/05/perennial-corner.html

Chicken Lady's Great Adventures. Wednesday, May 6, 2015. The sunchokes are also emerging. It's hard to believe now, but eventually they will grow to be about eight feet tall and sturdy. I need to dig extras this fall, otherwise my little patch will take over the world. The lovage is coming up nicely too, in two good sized clumps. I'm hoping this year I'll have enough to harvest and dry- it has a lovely strong celery flavor, perfect to add to winter stews and casseroles. May 7, 2015 at 6:21 AM. Finally, A...

Chicken Lady's Great Adventures: Hardening Off

http://chickenladysgreatadventures.blogspot.com/2015/05/hardening-off.html

Chicken Lady's Great Adventures. Thursday, May 14, 2015. The nightly trot- but not one will be frosted! I think the hardest thing here is to avoid sunscalding the leaves. If the plants get too much sun at first, their leaves bleach, crisp up and fall off. That results in a rather dead or sickly plant that never does recover. So I create little habitations for them to perch under, out of old bamboo roller shades. Thanks for taking the time to read and leave a comment! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Kitchen Vignettes by Aubergine

December 25, 2017. A holiday fruit salad. the way my mom made it. I'm sitting here wondering. is there a limit to how much butter a person can handle? I walked into the kitchen yesterday armed with 2 pounds of butter which somehow instantly disappeared into the parade of my usual holiday concoctions (I tend to think of it as my own little trifecta of holiday doughs. rich and unrestrained):. For dinner (with an all-butter spelt crust), and of course my mom's boozy, eggy, yeasty, buttery. As you may have g...
