For some reason a lot of people here are under the impression that New Zealand is internationally known for having great ice cream. On multiple occasions when the fact comes up that I don't like New Zealand ice cream I hear, "But New Zealand is supposed to make the best ice cream in the world! It's true that we are relatively safe from violent crime here. But the level of petty crime seems to be proportionally much higher. And no where is safe. Even the "good" neighborhoods have regular break-ins and burglaries. This post was prompted by this story in the Dominion Post. 1 January 2016 at 1:36 AM.

There is the Alpine Fault which runs along the spine of the South Island and is quite active. There are also the Porters Pass fault and the Hope fault which are a good distance from Christchurch.
