은 10년 전까지는 모든 리눅스/BSD 시스템에서 사용되던 프로그램이었지만 현재는 그 이름을 찾기조차 쉽지 않습니다. 그것도 소프트웨어가 사라진 것이 아니라 사람들이 원래 프로젝트를 버리고 fork했다는 점에서 더욱 안타깝죠. XFree86에 무슨 일이 있었던 것인지 정리해 보도록 하겠습니다. 시작하기에 앞서, 몇 가지 중요 X 역사를 정리하도록 하겠습니다. X는 1984년 MIT에서 발표되었으며, 초기에는 W. 의 대체품으로 개발되었습니다. W는 V. X11R75 표기는 X 버전 11, 리비전 7.5라는 의미입니다. X가 처음 나온 이후로 여러 차례의 수정이 있었으며, X 버전 1(1984년)에서 버전 10(1985년)까지 약 1년이 걸렸습니다. 한편 현재 최신 버전은 X11R7.7. X10R3은 1986년 2월에 나왔습니다. 이 때 흔히 MIT/X11 License. 로 부르는 라이선스가 처음 적용됩니다. X11은 1987년 9월에 공개되었습니다. 이에 따라 이름을 XFree86으로 바꾸게 됩니다.

최근에 새로운 컴퓨터를 사려고 이리저리 견적을 내보았는데, non-free binary blob. 가 하나도 필요하지 않도록 구입해보자는 생각이 들어 한번 시도해 보았습니다. 그런데 이거 생각보다 쉬운 일이 아니더군요. 직접 조립하고 언제나처럼 Debian Sid를 설치했습니다. 프로그램이 있는데, 컴퓨터에 설치된 패키지를 검사해서 non-free가 있는지를 알려줍니다. 이게 정확히는 FSF 가이드라인. 이 아니라 데비안 자유 소프트웨어 가이드라인(DFSG)을 따르는데, 가령 데비안에서는 GFDL도 경우에 따라 non-free로 구분하는 등의 차이가 있습니다. 그런 면에서는 vrms라는 이름이 조금 잘못된 감. 이 있죠 어쨌거나 저는 Debian 기준에서의 free를 목표로 했으니 실행해 보았습니다. 윈도에서 오픈 소스 프로그램을 써보려고 한다면 한번쯤은 MinGW라는 이름을 접하게 됩니다. 하지만 이게 어디에 쓰는 건지 홈페이지 설명을 봐서는 전혀 감이 오지 않을 거고요. 그저 윈도에서도 gcc를 쓸 수 있다더라 정도로 이해하는 게 보통일 겁니다.
