Kodálys musikwissenschaftliche Arbeit stand im Dienste der Erforschung der Volksmusik der Ungarn, ihrer benachbarten und ihrer verwandten Völker. Er bereiste, zusammen mit Béla Bartók, die Provinzen und Dörfer Ungarns und verschiedener Länder Ost- und Südosteuropas, um Volkslieder zu sammeln.
