How can you help? The Kaharoa Conservation Area is about 30 km by road, north-east of Rotorua City. Access is gained off the end of Kapukapu Road via Kaharoa Road, which runs off the Tauranga Direct Road. Kapukapu Road is unsealed for about 2km at the far end. How can you help? How to protect kokako. The main threats to native birds living in trees are climbing animals such as possums, ship rats and stoats. Of these, possums and ship rats have been identified through research as the major predators of kokako. They prevent the birds from breeding by eating both eggs and chicks. How can you help? Purpose of the Kaharoa Kokako Trust. The Kaharoa Kokako Trust was formed in 1997 by a group of local residents who wanted to save the few kokako that remained in the area. By reducing the number of possums and ship rats in the Kaharoa Conservation Area, we have enabled kokako numbers to grow. How can you help? Why are kokako special? North Island kokako (. Are only found in New Zealand. We believe they are the most beautiful songster in the bush - lots of people agree! Kokako belong to an ancient family of birds which includes the tieke (saddleback) and the extinct huia. Kokako were once common in lowland forests throughout New Zealand. Now there are fewer than 1400 surviving in the North Island. The South Island sub-species of kokako is believed to be extinct. Why are kokako endangered?
