Eating Miles for Breakfast. Video Episodes from the Yukon River Expedition. Western Arctic →. I remember playing barefoot one summer on my grandparent’s porch when I was a kid. My Grampa, Alfred Gates, was sitting in his rocking chair reading a book. He took one look at my bare feet, shook his head and said Kristin. You have Gates feet. I didn’t know what that meant but my chest swelled with pride. I have Gates feet. Feet like my Dad, feet like my cousins, feet like my Grampa! I have experimented with ta...

Eating Miles for Breakfast. The Summer of Yes. My Mom called it “the summer of yes.”. Great Explorers Looking off into Frobisher Bay. I am determined to keep myself open to every opportunity. Always say yes! This particular summer that characteristic led not to one but to three Arctic Expeditions. I ended up in Alaska’s Brooks Range, Canada’s Baffin Island, and Sweden’s Lapland. Eating Miles for Breakfast. Sedna Epic Expedition →. When I close my eyes, I can trace Alaska’s western Arctic in my mind. I know the major drainages by heart- a result of spending far too much time day dreaming over maps. Leaving the Koyukuk and traveling up the Alatna, you will find yourself nearing the Schwatka Mountains which feed the great Kobuk River. The kind of healthy, clean river that has helped sustain entire villages for as long as anyone can remember. I am beginning to understand where the r...

Nomadic Newfies: August 2015
http://nomadicnewfies.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
I have a room all to myself; it is nature. — Henry David Thoreau. Monday, August 31, 2015. Bonavista - the Town. We enjoyed the 2 hour drive in the fog and rain out to Bonavista from Terra Nova National Park. Newfies aren't much for turning their yards into roadside attractions, but Wayne liked the little town someone made for their yard. There are other things to see from the side of the road, including beaver busy in the ponds. And the boats lining the harbor attracted Wayne's eye. That one is at the...
Nomadic Newfies: Dickeyville Grotto
http://nomadicnewfies.blogspot.com/2015/08/dickeyville-grotto.html
I have a room all to myself; it is nature. — Henry David Thoreau. Tuesday, August 4, 2015. While driving around rural Wisconsin last week I passed through the small town of Dickeyville and spotted the Dickeyville Grotto. Stained glass restoration at Holy Ghost. The shrines consist of stone, mortar and bright colored objects from all over the world. These include colored glass, gems, antique heirlooms of pottery or porcelain, stalagmites and stalactites. How do you collect all that stuff? No rain today ...

Wonder Lake is much closer to the mountain and many classic photos were made here. It is an 11 hour round trip to mile 85. Way too long to be on a bus. Can you find the bear?
