The worst thing about owning a yarn store is being surrounded by yarn all day, seeing all the colors and feeling all the textures, recognizing the potential in each skein of yarn, and being too friggin' busy to knit or crochet! Here's what I've learned. 1) When starting a new project for which you don't have a pattern, do a gauge swatch so you can see how far the yarn will go. 2) Read the freakin yarn label and see how many yards are in the ball. 3) Calculate how many yards it will take to make the item. 4) calculate how many balls of yarn it will take. 5) multiply the cost of the yarn by the number of balls to see if it is worth it!
