A Matter of Oaths, Helen Wright | SF Mistressworks

Women science fiction writers. The Women’s Press sf. A Matter of Oaths, Helen Wright. July 27, 2011. A Matter of Oaths, Helen Wright (1988). Review by Kev McVeigh. Had Helen Wright’s only published novel A Matter Of Oaths. Appeared a couple of years after its 1988 publication it might have been seen as a significant contributor to the early 90s British SF and in particular Space Opera resurgence. Instead it seems to have disappeared almost unnoticed. Put so simply A Matter of Oaths. For all its galaxy-sp...

By Jamie Redgate – librarian, writer, independent researcher. Improving accessibility to library users with learning disabilities. March 9, 2016. Note: I use the term ‘people with learning disability/ies” to refer to anyone with “reduced intellectual ability and difficulty with everyday activities” ( Mencap [link]. This covers a very diverse group of people so suggestions can’t be generalised! Something I forgot to mention about the “ Diversity, Inclusivity and Equality in Libraries [link]. 8211; multi-s...

This is going to be the Kwerey.com blog, documenting site issues and discussing potential changes to the catalogue. Here’s an introduction to Kwerey.com. Drawn straight from our About page. Kwerey.com is a whole new kind of library catalogue: it’s a database of books that you can search not just by their titles and authors, but by what’s on the inside. The core idea for the site was born from that. Here it is: it’s harder to find books by women. March 10, 2014.

Making a Vagrant test environment for Drupal 7. Because that’s what I did on my week off! I started making my Kwerey.com website almost two years ago, stopped working on it about a year and a half ago, and since then I’ve upgraded the Ubuntu desktop it was running on. Turns out Apache 2.4 is pretty different to 2.2. So instead of wrangling the local dev environment I’ve got, I figured I’d make a Vagrant VM, because I’ve since used Vagrant at work and it’s super-handy. Install the Vagrant basics. If you g...

Women science fiction writers. The Women’s Press sf. Godsfire, Cynthia Felice. July 29, 2015. Godsfire, Cynthia Felice (1978). Review by Ian Sales. It’s not all that often the cover art on a science fiction novel gives a good indication of what’s inside, but Godsfire. 8216;s actually does a halfway decent job of setting out precisely what the reader can expect to find. To wit, a race of cat-people (who are not always naked, but never mind). And humans. But in Godsfire. From → book review. Leave one →.

Women science fiction writers. The Women’s Press sf. Brothers in Arms, Lois McMaster Bujold. July 22, 2015. Brothers in Arms, Lois McMaster Bujold (1989). Review by Adam Whitehead. Is a very solid novel, with some good action and laughs framing a more serious story that does a lot to advance Miles’s character and the overall storyline of the series. The novel is available now as part of the Miles Errant. This review originally appeared on The Wertzone. From → book review. Godsfire, Cynthia Felice →.

Ammonite, Nicola Griffith | SF Mistressworks

Women science fiction writers. The Women’s Press sf. Ammonite, Nicola Griffith. August 12, 2015. Ammonite, Nicola Griffith (1993). Review by Kate Macdonald. I think this may have been the first sf novel I read that I instantly recognised as feminist: not stealth, or muted, or sub-conscious. It was Nicola Griffith’s first novel, and if she had never written anything again it would still be stunning: it won the Tiptree Award, the Lambda Literary Award, and the Premio Italia.
