Kyler grew up in Ojai, California. After attending Cate High School in Carpinteria, he enrolled in the University of Southern California as a Broadcast and Digital Journalism major. While at USC, he worked at several broadcast news organizations, including stints at Annenberg TV News, KPCC and NBC4 News. In his final year at USC, Kyler turned his focus toward film.
