If total relaxation is your goal, then you never have to leave Talaramba Reef, but if you're feeling a little energetic, there's plenty to keep you occupied nearby. In the shade of a spreading cashew tree is the Talaramba Reef petanque court, scene of many an afternoon of intense competition. Work up an appetite with a casual pre-dinner game over a few cocktails. The surfing near Talaramba Reef is fantastic all year round, although good clean breaks are easier to find between November and April. Ther...

Galle consists of a bustling, modern Sri Lankan town, and the ancient UNESCO World Heritage Site of Galle Fort, founded by the Portuguese in 1588 and extended by the Dutch from 1640. A stroll through the Fort to see the different architectural styles, and to do some gem or gift shopping is highly recommended, followed by a drink ordinner at the gorgeous Galle Fort Hotel or Amangalla. Only 12km from Talaramba Reef, Matara has an attractive, leafy Fort district dating from the Dutch era including a simple ...

There are over four hundred species of birds in Sri Lanka, and it seems that many of them like to visit us. Our regular guests are the regal peacocks from the local temple, black and white woodpeckers who feast on bugs in the coconut trunks, and a pair of electric blue kingfishers that come to bathe in the swimming pools. You may also see monkeys in the trees at the back of the garden, stately monitor lizards ambling across the lawn, and chipmunks bounding across the roof tops. Loved it, what a spot!

Just beyond the cinnamon fence is the ever changing Indian Ocean, with nothing but water between you and Antarctica. This is a big ocean with big swells, and swimming is only truly safe in a very small number of places around the entire coastline of Southern Sri Lanka. Fortunately we are lucky enough to have Mirissa Beach's broad crescent of golden sand and safe swimming just minutes away. A stroll along the beach at sunset is a lovely way to sharpen the appetite before dinner. Read more from our guests.

Sri Lankan food is one of the World's great undiscovered cuisines, influenced by the ancient traders who plied the route between Africa, the Middle East, India and the East Indies, and Portuguese, Dutch and British colonials. The sea is bountiful, and the climate varies between tropical and temperate, meaning almost anything will grow here. Eat your fill of toast, local jams and marmalades, eggs as you like them, hoppers, fresh fruit, freshly squeezed juice, tea and coffee. Ceylon tea is world renowned, ...
