Dining at La Bique. The games room in the barn is home to table tennis, darts and table football. You'll find plenty of new bats, balls and darts for your use, as we replace them every spring. Under the shade of a large willow tree we have the petanque court. The scene of many a long afternoon of intense competition, supping cold drinks and nibbling on Jean Claude's tarte d'oignon. Although overshadowed by some of the greatest French wine regions in close-by Bordeaux, Bergerac, Cahors and Duras, our local Buzet does a good job of holding its head up amongst its better known brothers with Chateau Gueyze being the pick of the bunch. All of the supermarkets stock a good supply of wine, but you might want to check out the co-operative at Cave de Buzet for a special local bottle. Monique, our neighbour who farms the land around La Bique, will be happy to cater lunch or dinner, indoor or out; a truly massive benefit when you are a large group on a self catering holiday. Dining at La Bique. Ducks and geese kept for foie gras are generally free range.They are fattened for the last two to three weeks. The foie gras is preserved in terrines or jars, the leg turned into confit de canard, and the breast is often seen on local menus as magret de canard. Local gateau made of many layers of very thin, millefeuille pastry, usually with an apple or pruneaux filling. The best ones are sold in markets by old ladies, although you can sometimes find them in supermarkets.

There are over four hundred species of birds in Sri Lanka, and it seems that many of them like to visit us. Our regular guests are the regal peacocks from the local temple, black and white woodpeckers who feast on bugs in the coconut trunks, and a pair of electric blue kingfishers that come to bathe in the swimming pools. You may also see monkeys in the trees at the back of the garden, stately monitor lizards ambling across the lawn, and chipmunks bounding across the roof tops. Loved it, what a spot!
