Solola is not located directly on Lago de Atitlan. But it serves as an important center of commerce for the area. It’s a town of approximately 60,000 people, located about 5 miles to the north of the lake and Panajachel. And sitting significantly higher in elevation. It traditionally served as a trading place for vendors from the Pacific area, meeting those from the Highlands. Jaibalito is a picturesque, tiny village of about 400 people on the northern side of Lago de Atitlan. It’s a village that is only accessible by boat, or by foot, and unfortunately, the ‘by foot’ option is often unsafe. Santa Cruz La Laguna. This 5,000 population town is located on the north shores of Lake Atitlan. Due in part to the fact that it’s not serviced by roads, some excellent hiking is available, but as usual, check local conditions for safety precautions before heading out.
