Build Me a Love Shack: April 2009
http://buildmeashack.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
Monday, April 20, 2009. Here's an interesting feature on the slightly controversial green credentials of Corian. A material we've used in our kitchen here both as a surface and a splashback. Tuesday, April 14, 2009. Bedroom green roof install. Our bedroom - the smallest and least visible of the two green roofs on the site. Is about 3.5 x 4.5 metre. S in size, and for this green roof we used 9 x 100litre bags of lightweight vermiculite. Mixed in situ (see pic! This gave us a soil depth of about 15cm.

Build Me a Love Shack: March 2009
http://buildmeashack.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, March 21, 2009. Tuesday, March 10, 2009. Decking, decking everywhere. We don't like commercially available decking, easy and cheap though it may be. We designed and built a long boardwalk last summer, of this rough-planed '2 by 1' green larch. From the timber's variability - occasionally pieces are narrow or warped and you kind of get used to working around these defects. Below this carpet of decking pictured is a simple grid of joists. On site, arguably more than a lawn or gravel area would.

Build Me a Love Shack: Race-y chair
http://buildmeashack.blogspot.com/2011/01/race-y-chair.html
Monday, January 31, 2011. We have just bought the Shack a very nice present in the form of a classic chair and footstool by British designer Ernest Race. The Heron (archive photo on left), a classic which was in production until 1961. Unlike the photo, ours has an ingenious additional neck cushion suspended from a lead-weighted ' strap' that goes over the top of the chair. And boy is it comfy. For lots of lovely similar-era seating you might like this site. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Build Me a Love Shack: November 2009
http://buildmeashack.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 19, 2009. There I was lamenting the sudden closure of the Sawrey Stores. A valiant village shop that for several years supplied us with milk, odds and ends on our way to and from the Shack. I admired the lady who ran it and advised all our guests to use the shop rather than the Hawkshead alternatives nearby. And then I happened across her last blog entry, which offers no explanation for the closure but does include a rather sarcastic snipe at the Shack and ourselves! These objections c...

Build Me a Love Shack: February 2009
http://buildmeashack.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, February 10, 2009. I've got a sweat on. Even in February, when the sun shines on the shack, boy it gets warm. Our oak flooring is nearly done as you can see from this picture - c/o Pro-fit. I hear your shriek incredulously. It's ok, he's a German expat. Sorry seems to be the hardest word. Anyone who has built a house in the UK will know that the US style of ' customer-focused. And - often - the instructions. For the sliding door that have been trodden into the ground. Here's how to do it: "Oh, I...

Build Me a Love Shack: June 2011
http://buildmeashack.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 20, 2011. We won a RIBA award! A rather belated Mexican wave for us - the Shack won one of the 5 regional (NW) awards granted by the Royal Institute of British Architects. It's the only domestic house on the list, and has also been shortlisted for the prestigious Manser Medal. Even better, our other local project by Sutherland Hussey Architects at Lawson Park - also won a RIBA - 2 out of 5 ain't bad for Adam and his brother, our architect, Charlie ;-).
