Giving and Donations - Lakeshore Nature Preserve

https://lakeshorepreserve.wisc.edu/donate/giving.htm

Why giving to the Lakeshore Nature Preserve matters so much. It is an ironic fact that although the Lakeshore Nature Preserve is among the most distinctive and beloved features of the UW-Madison campus, it operates on a shoestring budget that provides nothing like the financial support that the Preserve could ideally use. Our needs for resources are many:. Major improvements to infrastructure. And many other needs and opportunities. All of this is just to state the obvious: we need you! How can you help?

Picnic Point - Lakeshore Nature Preserve

https://lakeshorepreserve.wisc.edu/visit/picnicpoint.htm

Picnic Point, a nearly mile-long peninsula along Lake Mendota's south shore, is among Madison's most distinctive features and is probably the most popular destination in the Preserve. Each year thousands of students and Madisonians visit the Point for outings. In a hectic world of university life or city living, it's nice to know that this natural area is just a short distance from where you live. Click photos for larger views. During the early 1900s, the Picnic Point farm fields were being rented out to...

birdy words & whims: July 2009

http://birdyword.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Friday, July 31, 2009. The beginning of the end for Texas banding. It has all come down to this, Week 10 of the 10-period banding season in Texas! Today was our first day of the 10th period. A slow start because of thunderstorms yesterday morning. Followed by more thunderstorms this afternoon and. Not any more this week. I've scheduled myself to hit the road by next Thursday night so I'm hoping everything can be wrapped up by then. At least it made for a fun day. Also, I have to note, it is not always ve...

birdy words & whims: November 2009

http://birdyword.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 23, 2009. This weekend I heard a bang on the glass sliding door. I ran to go look and see if a bird had tried to fly into our kitchen and saw a quite large bluish bird flying away from the porch. Not what I was expecting to see. What's big and blue. but definitely not a Blue Jay. The bird settled on the ground a few feet away from my window. It was a beautiful adult accipiter! I am starting to get a better "feel" for Sharpie vs. Coop's, so I decided my backyard predator was a Sharpie.

Tuesday, September 15, 2009. Raptor Banding at Stevens Point. OK, I'm a little behind in updating my blog! But a week ago I had the great opportunity to learn about raptor research techniques at the Linwood Springs Research Station. In Stevens Point, Wisconsin. My favorite was the Kestrel (an adult female). I love the falcon "helmet" or "side burns," that they have, very cute. Here I am with a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk. Notice that the tail is brown rather than reddish. Wednesday, September 9, 2009. I wan...

birdy words & whims: October 2009

http://birdyword.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 30, 2009. Common Ravens at Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. Thursday, October 29, 2009. Friend on my doorstep. He seems pretty content just sitting on the concrete slab, but hopefully he is finding food too. Tail looks more reddish and contrasting with body plumage, plus the thin eye-ring lack of the noticeable "buffy spectacles" over the bill are all leading me to believe it is a Hermit Thrush, but otherwise possibly Swainson's. They are tricky ones to ID. The biggest differenc...

birdy words & whims: June 2009

http://birdyword.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, June 30, 2009. Black-capped Vireos at Fort Hood. You might not think a station wagon is ideal for rugged conditions, but it is sort of a hybrid between a station wagon and an SUV and is technically all-wheel drive! This is a picture of my car in the field and covered in mud. It usually looks a whole lot filthier though. I miss my car! However, the one I have now is pretty nice and fancy, plus the A/c works a lot better! I just had to order a new power cord since mine is giving me grief (again)!

birdy words & whims: January 2010

http://birdyword.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 31, 2010. We started out the morning with a Rough-legged Hawk spotted just down the road from our starting point. Not even 5 minutes after baiting the Roughie with deer mice, he was on the trap. Poor guy was clearly hungry, like many birds are in winter. I must admit, I'm more of a songbird birder than a raptor watcher. So, I'm still in the process of learning my local birds of prey! Close-up with a Rough-legged Hawk. Loren with our first catch of the day. Our next catch was an immature R...

birdy words & whims: May 2010

http://birdyword.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 10, 2010. A little about leaves. So, a little about leaves. When it comes to tree identification, of course the most helpful tool is using the leaves. Even during the fall or winter you can pick leaves up off the ground and learn a bit about the vegetation around you. A little bit about leaves with lobes. One way to identify leaves is whether or not they are "lobed." Some familiar lobed leaves are Oak and Maple. But there are a few different species in these groups you can learn. Well in this...
