Sangerknaben: England, My England
http://sangerknaben.blogspot.com/2010/07/england-my-england.html
Sunday, July 25, 2010. England, My England. When I was ordering A Year at King's. I noticed another CD from King’s College that I, somehow, didn't own so I sent for it, too. This one is a 2009 release called England, My England. And it's a 2 CD set that is sort of like a greatest hits album. It sounds a lot different from the other one. Unlike the a capella singing in A Year at King's. Handel) and I Was Glad. And the architectural splendour of the 40-part Spem in Alium. Rutter), Magnificat in G. I was pa...

Sangerknaben: May 2009
http://sangerknaben.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, May 30, 2009. I had a small problem the other night and took a trip to the emergency room where I thought I would have a quick EKG and go home, but they wanted to keep me for tests the next day. They have a torture device there called a treadmill. A few more seconds on that and I would have confessed to being a terrorist. Anyway, the day was boring and a little worrisome but I had my iPod and I learned just how comforting it can be listening to boys singing spiritual songs. I knew that years ag...

Sangerknaben: September 2009
http://sangerknaben.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
Tuesday, September 29, 2009. I’ve wanted to say something for a while now about a CD from the Choir of King’s College. The trouble is I can’t find a lot to say about it. It’s a 1997 album that was recorded in their chapel and it has great resonance, but it’s been around for bit so I can’t find any information on the internet that refers to it. All I can go by is the booklet that came with the CD. It’s all beyond me since I know nothing about either the East or the West. I just like the music...I like ...

Sangerknaben: January 2010
http://sangerknaben.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, January 28, 2010. The Boys of St Thomas. Somehow I wound up with several new Christmas CD’s during the holidays and I suppose I could put them aside until next December rolls around or I could just go ahead and talk about them now. Oh, why wait? This one is from a very famous choir, Thomanerchor Leipzig. And it’s titled Weihnachtssingen der Thomaner. Which just means Christmas With the Boy Choristers of St Thomas. And In Dulci Jubilo. By Max Reger, Ubers Gebirg Maria Geht. In the last century a...

Sangerknaben: April 2009
http://sangerknaben.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
Wednesday, April 29, 2009. It’s a little ironic that composers can spend their lives creating great works of art and then they die and begin to decompose. It used to be that all I knew about Bach was that he composed music for the pipe organ. I thought he was okay but it wasn’t something I was really interested in. That was before I heard Bach choruses sung by boy choirs. Boy, did I change my mind fast. I had no idea how grand and beautiful his music could be. Sunday, April 26, 2009. If I had studied mus...

Sangerknaben: March 2009
http://sangerknaben.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, March 29, 2009. I received two CD’s from the Festival site last week that I wouldn’t have known about without a very good tip. Polski Slowiki has moved on now but some of their CD’s are still available out there. It‘s interesting that they were the first artists in Poland to record a CD back in 1984. I got the one titled Dennis as well as The Best of the Polish Nightingales and I’ve listened to them both a lot this week. Thursday, March 26, 2009. I mention these things because I still find myself...

Sangerknaben: I Saw Libera
http://sangerknaben.blogspot.com/2010/08/i-saw-libera.html
Wednesday, August 11, 2010. I just got back from Atlanta where I saw Libera perform at the Peachtree Presbyterian Church, a large complex in the swankiest part of town. It was really nice. The thing I usually don’t like about general admission seating is that I never know what to expect about the size of the auditorium, what sort of crowd will attend, and what time to arrive in order to get a good seat without standing around for hours before hand. I was curious about which boys would be there and especi...

Sangerknaben: Vienna Boys Choir Goes Pop
http://sangerknaben.blogspot.com/2010/08/vienna-boys-choir-goes-pop.html
Saturday, August 21, 2010. Vienna Boys Choir Goes Pop. One of the most controversial, well okay,. Most controversial CD I have in my collection is a 2002 release, The Vienna Boys Choir Goes Pop. I first learned of it when I saw three of the songs on another CD, Les Plus Belles Chorales D’Enfants, which is a great compilation album of lots of great choirs. If there is any disappointment in this CD it can’t be blamed on the boys, but is solely the responsibility of the director who chose the songs...

Sangerknaben: November 2009
http://sangerknaben.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Saturday, November 28, 2009. Everyone knows that the Vienna Boys Choir. Brucknerchor is touring the US but do you ever read the reports they give on the WSK home page? If you want a good laugh you should take a look at their blog entries. They are a lot more fun than mine and the humor makes the boys even more endearing. The painting at the top of this page is titled May Morning on Magdalen Tower. And was painted by William Holman Hunt, one of the greatest of the Victorian Pre-Raphaelite painters. By Pea...
