coming out of the tall grass: August 2009
http://cookiejar.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Coming out of the tall grass. Please knock on my little grey door. Monday, August 24, 2009. Ark, salt, clear, moving, utterly free. Although it is a cold evening,. Down by one of the fishhouses. An old man sits netting,. His net, in the gloaming almost invisible,. A dark purple-brown,. And his shuttle worn and polished. The air smells so strong of codfish. It makes one's nose run and one's eyes water. The five fishhouses have steeply peaked roofs. And narrow, cleated gangplanks slant up. While he waits f...

Coming out of the tall grass. Please knock on my little grey door. Saturday, January 30, 2010. My minute of silence. That and Lyra and the aleiometer in Phillip Pullman's Northern Lights trilogy - not by grace but by learning. So I'm in Cambridge, or perhaps at Cambridge, more accurately; I should be here until June; I'm reading for an MPhil in Political Thought and Intellectual History. I may have mentioned this. Friday, January 29, 2010. Matteo Ricci's world map. With China at its centre. One of the be...

Coming out of the tall grass. Please knock on my little grey door. Saturday, August 21, 2010. Sunday, August 15, 2010. For about fifteen minutes each way (ten for a competent driver, and five if you don't drive at the speed limit), and only one almost-accident (when I stalled on the slip road). I can also park, kind of, if the lots are wide and the car park empty and the parking gods in an indulgent mood. Tuesday, August 10, 2010. Tail, chasing, circles. Tail, chasing, circles.

Sunday, June 27, 2004. Zoe Heller, Notes On A Scandal. Posted by Terry at 8:31 PM. Saturday, June 26, 2004. Today, we finally moved back to our old house, which we'd given the mother of all renovations. Finally, after 7 months in a cramped apartment across the road, it was good to be home. Posted by Terry at 6:57 AM. Sunday, June 20, 2004. He stood by the taxi as I closed the door, my head reeling and buzzing. Enriched by booze, partings take on a certain pathos. Having always valued his company,...The n...

Coming out of the tall grass. Please knock on my little grey door. Saturday, October 24, 2009. On the way back - a guy cycling down Trinity Lane drinking a half-pint of milk. Friday, October 23, 2009. In my borrowed copy of Albert O. Hirschman's The Passions and the Interests. Which I've only read a third of but recommend unreservedly - a previous reader has pencilled helpful comments in the margin. The marginalia writer's gloss: natural but unintended. Gloss: the unintended consequence of the CONSEQUENCE.

Coming out of the tall grass. Please knock on my little grey door. Tuesday, August 10, 2010. Tail, chasing, circles. Each time I try to start afresh and write only inspired, thoughtful, sensible things, I run out of words. I have therefore decided to return to pointless griping. Form of knowledge; two, human resource types; three, marketing types; and four, accounting types. I fall into none of these categories. I'm not sure, because I have not quite given up entirely, I want. Tail, chasing, circles.

Coming out of the tall grass. Please knock on my little grey door. Thursday, July 29, 2010. Why I should stick to walking. I am, it is clear, not one of nature's drivers. After a long two-hour session my father looked at me and said, perhaps you just have to figure out where "true straight" is in relation to your "straight". Thursday, July 22, 2010. Thursday, July 29, 2004. There's a reason why people keep koi. They survive. After a week, only 5 archer fish remain despite all efforts to make them shoot water at crickets. The pearl arowana which cost 35 friggin bucks was so proud he decided to drown himself on dry land. And not a single bloody koi is dead, the cowards. Looks like I'm really out of touch. Oh well. This should be the last entry of the month, and before I know it, August will creep up like a thief. Posted by Terry at 7:43 AM. I realised...
