John and I took a weeklong vacation and spent the time exploring Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago. Why? Except for a January visit to Chicago for work, I’d never been to the Midwest. Continued from Milwaukee: More Than You Know. We pop in the independent bookstore a few places down and browse for a long time before walking to the car. So far all we’ve seen are short buildings — maybe 3-4 stories. Are we in a different city? I convince John to drive to the city center and we do a whirlwind walk of the familiar sites around the river, near the Magnificent Mile. The sun’s final rays reflect off the buildings beautifully. When was the last time you were really drunk? It’s a fun game.

After the annual family reunion, John and I took an extra day to explore the Finger Lakes region of New York State. We started Sunday morning at Watkins Glen. Where a 3-mile round trip hike follows cascading waters through a narrow gorge. The paved trail even goes behind two waterfalls!
