New Study: Fracking moratorium could cost Boulder County $1 billion. The National Association of Royalty Owners commissioned a report that estimates the future cash flows related to expected horizontal well results in the Wattenberg Field in Boulder County. The results show that Boulder County could be on the hook for over $1 billion from successful takings claims, or just compensation for the public use of private property, such as a ban on developing minerals in the Wattenberg Field. How Much Water Does Fracking Use? Colorado fracking uses the same water supply as municipalities, agriculture and other businesses. Yet, fracking uses only 0.1% of total water consumed in Colorado. After water is used, energy companies safely treat and then either properly dispose of the water or recycle and reuse it. Because fracking is less water-intensive than other energy production processes, fracking helps with Colorado’s water scarcity issues by reducing overall consumption.
