From the open door. Here is a good view of what the Delta looked like. Wet. We are going out to set up for a night ambush. What do you bet we get wet when we jump out. Large evacuation from what was a very hot area. Many squads from the 199th and other units were lifted out of this area along the Cambodian border after a completed operation. The smell of napalm. The price of war. Whether dropped from a jet or sprayed from a river boat, napalm was always something to watch. This baby pulled in after we were fired on trying to off load. You would think after all the heat it would be an easy drop. Not this day. This is our platoon sergeant back at base camp. He was wounded during the skirmish above. The real Forrest Gump. Never has been, Never will be. Since the beginning of time. Freedom has had a price. Saigon then, Ho Chi Minh City now. From these pictures you can't even tell the country was at war. People went on living their daily lives as usual, like the war was a minor interruption,. And maybe it was, for they have known nothing but war for the past 300 years. We were never allowed in Saigon. It was strictly off limits to visit. The only time I was there I was traveling through.

This artillery gun was named Birth Control and I guess with good reason. It got a regular workout from our basecamp. Go anywhere. Not really. Tanks will sink up to their guns in a rice paddy. Main road travel only in the Delta region. Visit this pro's site and see the war from his perspective.
