The Kara Trail: a wrap up from the port of Devon and the spirit of Tasmania
http://thekaratrail.blogspot.com/2012/11/a-wrap-up-from-port-of-devon-and-spirit.html
Sunday, November 11, 2012. A wrap up from the port of Devon and the spirit of Tasmania. Oh the joys of solo travel. I am sitting in a pretty funky tapas bar (the third place I tried for dinner as the two that I actually liked were both hosting weddings) and typing on my laptop. I feel like a terribly important business executive but probably just look like a wanker. Never mind! Oh well, I suppose he does make a living out of it so fair enough. I've crisscrossed most of the south, east and north west of T...

The Kara Trail: the wild tarkine coast
http://thekaratrail.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-wild-tarkine-coast.html
Sunday, November 11, 2012. The wild tarkine coast. The Tarkine coastline. I've been lazy and not written about it, but that isn't because I wasn't absolutely blown away by it. In my travels around the world, I've always had to bite down a feeling of guilt when I've visited some "amazing" beach. The iridescent blue of the Greek islands? Try Rottnest. The Cinque Terre? Try Mosman Park when the wind is blowing in the direction that makes it kind of smelly. Spain? Try Scarbs. Wineglass Bay? We took a 4WD tra...

The Kara Trail: November 2008
http://thekaratrail.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 25, 2008. Leafy, hilly Buda and busy traffic clogged Pest ‑ two cities united in 1111 by a king and a bridge to become Budapest. The fact that this event existed underlines what is perhaps my favourite thing about Budapest ‑ that it doesn't shut down for winter the way so many places do. There are still festivals, parties, meetings, shops still open for their normal hours, tourist places still run and people still smile. Typically there are three pools, a hot one, a warm one, and a cool...

The Kara Trail: July 2011
http://thekaratrail.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Sunday, July 24, 2011. The Trail Picks Up Again. London for me is like that hilarious good-time friend we all have. The one who comes to your house, entertains you with crazy antics, gets you ridiculously drunk, drinks all your gin, steals all your money, pukes in the bathroom and then leaves without saying goodbye. You wake up with a hangover and smile ruefully as you clean up their mess, again. I last saw London in early 09 when I rang in the new year somewhere around Maida Vale. No plans. Why? La Via ...

Sunday, November 11, 2012. The Best of Tasmania - Recommendations. I haven't done this before but as this travel blog expands, it seems worth doing from now on. So, the best of Tasmania, based of course on my own personal experience, and therefore probably missing a lot out! Best Picnic Spot - Sideline Lookout near Scottsdale. Prettiest Towns - Deviot, Ross and Stanley. Best Camping Spots - Cockle Creek (far south) and Jeanneret Bay (Bay of Fires). Best B&Bs - Meredith House in Swansea (amazing hosts!

The Kara Trail: orange rocks, white sand, turquoise water and a very little tent
http://thekaratrail.blogspot.com/2012/10/orange-rocks-white-sand-turquoise-water.html
Tuesday, October 30, 2012. Orange rocks, white sand, turquoise water and a very little tent. Too long since I wrote - where have I been! I took the requisite photos and marvelled, like so many before me, at the orange lichen on the rocks, the white sand and the turquoise water. After a short stroll or two, I hopped back in the car and drove to St Helen's (I don't remember if the apostrophe is there or not! Eventually I came to St Mary's. It was a sweet little mountain town with a view to the ocean, a...

The Kara Trail: MONA, the world’s largest house cat, it seems I might be dead, and are you rushing to the poo machine?
http://thekaratrail.blogspot.com/2012/10/mona-worlds-largest-house-cat-it-seems.html
Monday, October 22, 2012. MONA, the world’s largest house cat, it seems I might be dead, and are you rushing to the poo machine? When my little Tassie tour was first conceived, there was no MONA. The Museum of Old and New Art opened in January last year. It’s the brainchild of David Walsh, of whom there is a rather interesting introduction on the MONA website:. Ronted at the lack feeling con. Fronted. Too many art galleries in my travels? Too little religious fervour? When we arrived someone commented on...

The Kara Trail: August 2011
http://thekaratrail.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
Monday, August 22, 2011. Russia has been a far‑off mysterious place to me since I was a child. It's a fascination that was passed down to me by my mother, along with my Russian name. In my mind, towering colourful Byzantine spires rose out of dark, murky Communist streets, the freezing air was broken by breath warmed with vodka and hulking figures stomped along the icy streets, eyes on the ground. The Communist prison in Romania's northern city of Sighetu Marmatiei contained a punishment cell in which pr...
