http://beninmali.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Wednesday, May 20, 2009. End of the swim project. Wednesday, May 20. One of the Protection Civile groups. Well it's been a crazy couple weeks. I finally did get a new camera, and just about 3 days later my computer died. Blue screen of death, couldn't even boot to BIOS to wipe the hard drive! Anyway we wrapped up the swim project a week and a half ago. All in all it went very well! Ami, the best of our female trainees. Chef Tall practices first aid. Our first day on the Niger. One of our best swimmers, Y...

Saturday, June 13, 2009. On being a rock star. It's rainy season, and that means thunderstorms! Monday, June 8. Look, a toubab! 8221; or, if they know my Malian name, just “Demba! 8221; Adolescents shout “hey! 8221; regardless of the time of day, fall into peels of laughter, and often follow it up with a “donne-moi l'argent! 8221; Step off a bus and the taxi drivers and beggar children swarm. Take my bike anywhere and as soon as I stop at least one person is bound to remark “that's a nice bike! To be sur...

Ben in Mali: July 2009
http://beninmali.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 18, 2009. The far northeast, camel steaks, and oliphants! Sunday, July 12. So I finally made it to the far Northeast! L and I took advantage of the last Peace Corps shuttle going to Gao before we head home. Unfortunately it was on July 3. That's how long the drive is) so we couldn't go to Manantali for the 4. Of July celebration like last year, meaning we gave up our last chance to see hippos, but it turned out to be well worth it. The Hand of Fatima. Tomb of the Askias. View from the top.

Ben in Mali: November 2008
http://beninmali.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 21, 2008. I’ve heard a lot of places accused of being the middle of nowhere, and Mali contains more than a few of them. None, however, quite compare to that most Middle of Nowheres, Timbuktu. In fact many people assume that the legendary Timbuktu is just that – a legend. Like Atlantis, if it ever existed it is surely long gone; existing only as an idea, a metaphor for the very essence of middle of nowhere. This seems self-defeating to me:. There are no roads to Timbuktu. 8211; about 4am ...

Friday, December 4, 2009. I'd been thinking I needed to do one last post, now that I'm back in Ameriki, to put some closure on this whole blog thing. Yeah I've been busy, blah blah, but the truth is I've been avoiding it, maybe even a little afraid of thinking about it. Or "Was it hard getting back to America? And didn't get a satisfactory answer from me (and I certainly haven't given an answer that was satisfactory to me), please please please read this post:. Thanks for reading,. Posted by Ben in Mali.

Friday, August 21, 2009. What I've been up to for my last few weeks in Mali. Okay time for a brief rundown of what I've been up to for the past few weeks, since I haven't had time to sit down and write anything. I'm not going to talk about the fact that I'm leaving site one week from this morning, because I tried to write about it and failed completely, I can't even explain how I'm feeling to myself. Here goes then! I got a goat! My new goat, her name is Goat Light (inside joke. go to Ghana). Since I was...

Ben in Mali: March 2009
http://beninmali.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 23, 2009. Today was finally day one of the swim project! So the weekend before St. Patricks day was pretty bleak, our project had been cut down from 68 people for 8 weeks to 26 people for 7 weeks (we have a time constraint on the other end of the project so every day later we start is a day less we can provide training). Posted by Ben in Mali. Saturday, March 7, 2009. Hope to update soon. Posted by Ben in Mali. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Books I've read during my service. Tracy Kidder, "Mo...
