The Arabist: October 2005

Wednesday, October 26, 2005. What Arabic Linguist Shortage? Everywhere one looks, the consensus is that the United States (and I suppose every other non-Arabic speaking country) has a shortage of Arabic linguists to meet the new threat that the "war on global extremism" or whatever the Bush administration is calling it now. So why is it that I cannot beg my way into government service as an Arabic linguist? That they are still considering my application but no word after nearly three months? The Yemen La...

http://arabistfancy.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html
Friday, July 21, 2006. You may be wondering what I did for World Cup action after Italy knocked Germany out of the World Cup. At the time, I was wondering what I was going to do myself. Fortunately, luck was on my side as France made it into the finals. Why was this lucky? Because my German friends, Uwe and Sabine, are rather well acquainted with Theo, who is an American that until recently was working at the English language newspaper. Posted by Gary B @ 4:21 PM. The Arabist: December 2005
http://arabistfancy.blogspot.com/2005_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 27, 2005. It looks as if everything has pretty much fallen into place for my February departure to study in Yemen for what I am expecting to be about twelve months in length. This week I begin the process of getting from Seattle, Washington to Sana’a, Yemen. I decided to attend the Center for Arabic and Eastern Studies (CALES - http:/ www.y.net.ye/cales/. To be honest, my first choice was the Yemen Language Center (YLC - http:/ www.ylcint.com/. Posted by Gary B @ 8:19 PM. I realize that...

The Arabist: February 2006
http://arabistfancy.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, February 25, 2006. Please forgive any typos :). Wednesday, February 22, 2006. Day two has seen quite a bit of progress so far. Not in learning Arabic but in other equally rewarding ways. I’ve used the squatter twice now and I’m happy to say that I’ve not had any problems yet. I attribute this to Pepto Bismal (of which I brought tons) but it could just be dumb luck. I also got to experience my first random power outage. Anyway, back to my adventure. It seems that another student here, Aaron,...

http://arabistfancy.blogspot.com/2006_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, March 18, 2006. I originally posted this on my Word of the Day blog (which I've been studiously neglecting) but I don't think many peeps hit that site and I wanted to share this with everybody back home. It's a generic dictator chant! Insert random dictator's name) بالروح بالدم نفديك يا. Biruuh bidim nafdiik Ya (random dictator's name)}. This loosely translates to "With soul, with blood, we sacrifice - Oh (random dictator's name)! Don't be shy, I know you want put Bush's name in that chant ;).

Posted a rather neat link to Defense Language Institute's free online Basics of Iraqi Arabic. The course is set up in a phrase book style, complete with the Arabic writing, the audio, and the transliteration of the word/phrase in question (in Iraqi dialect where applicable). We are your friends. We are not your enemies. Posted by Gary B @ 8:24 PM. Saturday, January 28, 2006.
