Thoughts of a writer on the road. Leave a comment ». Well, our success or failure in Afghanistan depends on answering one question, which I have yet to see answered. What are we there to do? Ostensibly we are there to make sure that the country does not once again become a safe-haven for Al Qaeda. In reality what we are engaged in is trying to create a functioning society where there is none; where there has never been one. Is our massive investment in Afghanistan, in a time of economic strain, worth it?
