What's the difference between marketing and public relations? What's the difference between marketing and public relations? April 24, 2007. At a workshop session yesterday I was asked what was the difference between marketing and public relations. A good few years ago the answer would have been that marketing was paid-for exposure under a company’s direct control, while public relations was free exposure. Once you cut through the business jargon that shrouds these definitions, what’s left? The two profes...

Is blogging a PR tool?
http://victorianewlands.typepad.com/is_blogging_a_pr_tool
Is blogging a PR tool? November 15, 2006. Just how cheap is it to blog effectively for PR? I accept that this 'new' social media is extremely low cost *cheap* in the sense that the tools used, for example the 'blogging platforms' such as this (Typepad) offer free trials and may only cost something like $4 monthly after that time period. I believe it is absolutely essential to carry out the necessary research, who's talking about what and where? Who is reading what they say? The list goes on. Nicky @ Don'...

Media Impressions: November 2013
http://newmediaimpressions.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Monday, 25 November 2013. Public sphere-like communications develop in UK financial sector. We are starting to see a number of organisations realising that the issues they are facing are too great to be resolved by their own actions. They need help. They need to share the pain, even the guilt in the public sphere. The method which seems to be developing is by commissioning a report from an outside expert or organisation and by doing so opening up problems and agendas to public debate. This is an area whi...

Media Impressions: March 2013
http://newmediaimpressions.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Monday, 18 March 2013. Public opinion takes centre stage in Cyprus banks' levy. The initial announcement by the European Bank and also the IMF of the rescue of the Cyprus banking system which included measures to take a percentage from all customers accounts above and below 100,000 euros did seem particularly inept. Banks picking on the small customer and taking hard earned cash from their accounts after all the bailing out of European banks by European taxpayers did seem an extraordinary own-goal. Highl...

Friday, 5 June 2015. Leadership agendas - stakeholders, corporatism and public diplomacy. Attended this week a very good session at the IoD. To launch Dr Roger Hayes and Dr Reggie Watts' book on leadership. The book. Provides an excellent insight into current and emerging stakeholder agendas and their influence and agendas for leadership. Roger has been a great supporter to the PR programmes. And that a recent piece in the Columbia Journalism Review. Criticises Hillary Clinton's campaign as being too "co...

Media Impressions: Leadership styles and decision making in a crisis - sub-text to CIA report

Thursday, 11 December 2014. Leadership styles and decision making in a crisis - sub-text to CIA report. The Senate Intelligence report. On torture by the CIA. George Tenet, CIA Director, receives Presidential Media of Freedom, 2004. It is not often that we can see two leaders of major organisations facing the same decision in the same timescale and the reputational damage incurred (and in the case of the FBI avoided) by a decision taken many years before in the heat of the moment. Discussion of PR themes...
